New: practical guides to visas, work and everyday life in Japan

About TalkToJapan

Why TalkToJapan exists, who it is for and how we write and check every lesson and guide.

TalkToJapan was created to make learning Japanese and understanding Japan easier for people around the world. From the language and culture to work, everyday life, housing and current affairs, we bring practical, reliable information about Japan together in one place — to help you take your next step towards learning, working and living in Japan.

Who TalkToJapan is for

Most of our readers are preparing for a big change. Many come from South and Southeast Asia — Bangladesh, India, Nepal, the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia — but everyone is welcome.

  • Japanese learners starting the JLPT path, from hiragana and katakana to their first N5 grammar and kanji.
  • People preparing for work or study in Japan — Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) candidates, students heading to language schools and universities, and engineers and other professionals.
  • Newcomers in their first months who need to register an address, join health insurance, open a bank account, find an apartment and settle in.
  • Anyone curious about Japan — its culture, festivals, etiquette and daily life.

How we write

Original lessons

Every Japanese lesson is written from scratch for TalkToJapan. We do not copy from textbooks or other websites. Since the JLPT has no official vocabulary or kanji list, our levels follow commonly accepted lists.

Official sources and “last checked” dates

Visa, work and life guides are based on official sources such as the Immigration Services Agency of Japan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, ministries and city offices. Each guide links to its sources and shows when it was last checked, because rules and fees change often.

Plain English

We write in clear, simple English for readers who may be using English as a second language. Japanese words come with readings and meanings.

Corrections welcome

If you find a mistake or something out of date, please tell us through the contact form (choose “Content correction”). We check every report, fix confirmed errors and update the “last checked” date.

Independence

TalkToJapan is independent. We are not affiliated with the Government of Japan, any embassy, school or recruitment agency. We never charge for visa applications or job placement, and we never ask readers for money to “guarantee” a visa or a job. If someone does, please be careful and check with the official sources linked in our guides.

About the founder

Aowlad Hossain is the founder of TalkToJapan. A web designer and developer by background, he built TalkToJapan to bring clear, reliable information about the Japanese language, work, life and culture in Japan together in one place — especially for people preparing to study, work or live there.
