N4 Grammar Lesson 22

Describing things: noun-modifying clauses, 〜かどうか, の and こと

Describe things with a whole sentence before a noun (きのう買ったかさ), put questions inside sentences with 〜か and 〜かどうか, turn verbs into nouns with の and こと, report a lost umbrella at the station — and learn 品, 別, 売, 借, 貸 and 服.

In this lesson you will

  • Describe a noun with a plain-form clause: きのう買ったかさ
  • Put a question inside a sentence with question word + か and 〜かどうか
  • Turn a verb into a noun with の and こと: 〜のが好きです, しゅみは〜ことです
  • Use 借りる and 貸す correctly
  • Report a lost item and describe it

In English we say “the umbrella that I bought yesterday” — the description comes after the noun. In Japanese the whole description comes before the noun, in the plain form: きのう買ったかさ. With this one pattern you can describe almost anything: a lost item, the person you are looking for, the shop that sells what you need. This lesson also shows how to put questions inside sentences and how to turn verbs into nouns.

A sentence before a noun

Put a plain-form sentence directly before the noun. There is no word like “that” or “which”: きのう買ったかさ — “the umbrella I bought yesterday”; 駅の前にある店 — “the shop in front of the station”; 日本語を話せる人 — “a person who can speak Japanese”; 青あおいかばんを持もっている人 — “the person holding a blue bag”.

SentenceBefore a nounMeaning
きのうかさを買いましたきのう買ったかさthe umbrella I bought yesterday
店は駅の前にあります駅の前にある店the shop in front of the station
あの人は日本語が話せます日本語が話せる人a person who can speak Japanese
かばんは黒くて大きいです黒くて大きいかばんa big black bag
この部へ屋は静しずかです静しずかな部へ屋a quiet room

Two details: inside the clause, the subject usually takes が (or の), not は — 私が買ったかさ / 私の買ったかさ. And polite ます forms are not used before a noun: 買いましたかさ ✗.

Questions inside sentences: 〜か and 〜かどうか

To put a question inside a sentence, use the plain form + か: 店が何時に開くか、知しっていますか — “Do you know what time the shop opens?” どこでなくしたか、分かりません — “I don’t know where I lost it.” For a yes / no question, use 〜かどうか (“whether or not”): 店が開いているかどうか、電話で聞きます — “I’ll phone to ask whether the shop is open.” After nouns and な-adjectives there is no だ: あしたが休みかどうか.

Verbs as nouns: の and こと

Add の or こと to a plain form to use it as a noun. の is common with feelings and senses: 料理を作つくるのが好きです — “I like cooking.” かぎをかけるのを忘わすれました — “I forgot to lock the door.” こと is used for facts, rules and set patterns: しゅみは写真をとることです — “My hobby is taking photos.” (〜ことができます in lesson 7 and 〜たことがあります in lesson 3 are the same こと.) With 見る and 聞く for something you see or hear happening, only の is possible: 子どもが歌うたうのを聞きました — “I heard the children singing.”

Borrow and lend: 借りる and 貸す

借りる is “to borrow” (you receive): 友だちにかさを借りました — “I borrowed an umbrella from a friend.” 貸す is “to lend” (you give): 友だちにかさを貸しました — “I lent a friend an umbrella.” To ask politely: ペンを貸してもらえませんか or ペンを借りてもいいですか. Both are good; don’t say 借りてください when you mean “please lend me”.

At the station lost-and-found

An original example at a station office:

リー:すみません。電車の中にかさを忘わすれてしまったんですが…。
駅員:どんなかさですか。
リー:黒くて長いかさです。きのう駅の売店で買ったかさで、白い名前のシールがはってあります。
駅員:何時ごろの電車に乗のっていたか、分かりますか。
リー:八時十分に東口から出た電車です。前から三ばんめの車両しゃりょうでした。
駅員:見つかったかどうか、調しらべますから、少し待まってください。

Lee: Excuse me, I left my umbrella on the train … Staff: What kind of umbrella? Lee: A long black one. It’s the one I bought at the station kiosk yesterday, and there’s a white name sticker on it. Staff: Do you know about what time the train was? Lee: It was the train that left at 8:10 from the east side. The third car from the front. Staff: I’ll check whether it has been found, so please wait a moment.

If you lose something on a train or in a station, ask at the station office as soon as possible and describe the item in detail — colour, size, what is inside, where you sat. The staff will tell you where the item goes next. Many railway companies also have a lost-property page on their website.

Shopping words: 売り場, 品物, 別の

In a department store, the floor guide lists 売り場 (うりば, sales floors): 婦人ふじん服売り場 (women’s clothing), 紳士しんし服売り場 (men’s clothing), 食品売り場 (food hall). 品物 (しなもの) is goods. To ask for another one: 別のサイズはありますか — “Do you have it in another size?” 別の色を見せてください — “Please show me a different colour.”

New kanji: 品, 別, 売, 借, 貸, 服

品 (three mouths) is goods: 品物 (しなもの), 食品 (しょくひん, food products). 別 is separate: 別の (べつの, another), 特別 (とくべつ, special). 売 is to sell: 売る (うる), 売り場, 売店 (ばいてん, kiosk). 借 and 貸 are borrow and lend: 借りる (かりる), 貸す (かす) — they are easy to mix up: 借 has the narrow “person” shape on the left, 貸 is built from top to bottom. 服 is clothes: 服 (ふく), 洋服 (lesson 21), 制せい服 (せいふく, uniform).

Frequently asked questions

Why does the description come before the noun?

In Japanese, anything that describes a noun comes before it: adjectives (大きいかばん) and whole sentences (きのう買ったかばん) work the same way. Think of the clause as one long adjective.

When do I use の and when こと?

Both turn a verb into a noun. Use の with likes, feelings and things you see or hear (〜のが好き, 〜のを見た). Use こと with facts, rules and set patterns (しゅみは〜ことです, 〜ことができます). When both are possible, の is more conversational.

How do I remember 借りる and 貸す?

借りる (borrow) is a group 2 verb, like receiving: 友だちに借りる. 貸す (lend) is like giving: 友だちに貸す. To ask for something, say 貸してもらえませんか or 借りてもいいですか.

What should I do if I lose something on a train?

Go to the station office as soon as possible and describe the item: colour, size, what is inside and where you were. The staff will check and tell you where it goes next. Many railway companies also have a lost property page on their website.
