In this lesson you will
- Choose あります for things and います for people and animals
- Say what is in a place: 〜に〜があります/います
- Say where something is: 〜は〜にあります/います
- Describe positions with 上・下・中・前・後ろ・となり・近く
- Read and write 前, 後, 近, 右 and 左
Where is the station? Is there a convenience store near my apartment? Who is in the office? In Japanese, these sentences use two verbs that both mean “there is / to be (somewhere)”: あります and います.
あります or います?
- あります — for things, plants and places: つくえがあります, コンビニがあります.
- います — for people and animals (things that move by themselves): 先生がいます, ねこがいます.
Both have the normal ます forms: ありません, ありました, ありませんでした; いません, いました, いませんでした. あります also means “to have”: 明日テストがあります (I have a test tomorrow).
Two sentence patterns
The pattern depends on what you want to say:
- What is there? Place に thing が あります: えきの近くにコンビニがあります — “There is a convenience store near the station.”
- Where is it? Thing は place に あります: コンビニはえきの近くにあります — “The convenience store is near the station.”
The first pattern introduces something new (with が); the second talks about something already known (with は). For the second pattern you can also simply say コンビニはえきの近くです.
Position words
Position words are nouns. Use them with の: [reference] の [position] に.
| Word | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 上 | うえ | on; above |
| 下 | した | under; below |
| 中 | なか | in; inside |
| 前 | まえ | in front of |
| 後ろ | うしろ | behind |
| となり | となり | next to (side by side) |
| 近く | ちかく | near; nearby |
| 右 / 左 | みぎ / ひだり | right / left |
| あいだ | あいだ | between (A と B のあいだ) |
For example: ねこはいすの下にいます (The cat is under the chair), ぎんこうはスーパーのとなりにあります (The bank is next to the supermarket), ゆうびんきょくはぎんこうとびょういんのあいだにあります (The post office is between the bank and the hospital).
Asking questions
- 何がありますか — What is there?
- だれがいますか — Who is there?
- トイレはどこにありますか — Where is the toilet?
Remember: question words take が, never は. The answer to “nothing / nobody” uses も and the negative: 何もありません, だれもいません.
Common mistakes
- Using あります for people: 先生がいます, not “先生があります”.
- Using で for the place: へやにねこがいます, not “へやでねこがいます”. で is for actions.
- Forgetting の with position words: つくえの上, not “つくえ上”.
- Using 近く like an English preposition: えきの近く (near the station), not “近くえき”.
How to practise
- Describe your room: つくえの上に何がありますか — and answer it.
- Describe the streets around your home or station with 近く, となり and 前.
- Practise asking where things are in a shop: 〜はどこにありますか.
- Do the worksheet: write the new kanji and choose あります or います.

Practice quiz
Frequently asked questions
Do plants take あります or います?
あります. います is only for people and animals — living things that move by themselves. Trees, flowers and plants use あります.
What is the difference between となり and よこ?
となり is used for two things of the same kind side by side (two shops, two people, two houses). よこ simply means “beside” and can be used for anything. At N5, となり is the one you will use most.
Can I say 〜は〜です instead of 〜は〜にあります?
Yes. コンビニはえきの近くです is natural and common in conversation. 〜にあります is a little more explicit.
How do I ask for directions in a station?
Use 〜はどこですか or 〜はどこにありますか: すみません、きっぷうりばはどこですか (Where is the ticket office?). Station staff often answer with あちら (over there) and point.
