In this lesson you will
- Recognise い-adjectives and use them with です
- Make the negative with 〜くないです
- Make the past with 〜かったです and 〜くなかったです
- Use the irregular いい (よくない, よかった)
- Put an い-adjective directly before a noun
Adjectives let you describe things: a big station, an expensive apartment, a difficult test. Japanese has two types of adjectives. This lesson covers the first type, い-adjectives, which end in い and change their ending like verbs do.
What is an い-adjective?
An い-adjective ends in い in its basic form: 大きい (big), 高い (expensive; tall), 新しい (new), おいしい (tasty). Add です to be polite: このラーメンはおいしいです — “This ramen is tasty.”
The four forms
To change an い-adjective, drop the last い and add a new ending. です stays at the end to keep it polite.
| Tense | Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| Present | 高いです — is expensive | 高くないです — is not expensive |
| Past | 高かったです — was expensive | 高くなかったです — was not expensive |
You may also hear 高くありません and 高くありませんでした for the negatives. They are a little more formal and mean the same.
The irregular いい
いい (good) is the only irregular い-adjective. Its other forms come from the older word よい: よくないです (not good), よかったです (was good), よくなかったです (was not good). Never say “いくない” or “いかった”.
い-adjective + noun
Put the adjective directly before the noun — no extra word: 大きいえき (a big station), 新しいスマホ (a new smartphone), 安いレストラン (a cheap restaurant). To ask “what kind of …?”, use どんな: どんなへやですか — 新しいへやです.
高い has two meanings: “expensive” for prices and “tall/high” for buildings and mountains. Its opposite depends on the meaning: 安い (cheap) or ひくい (low).
Common mistakes
- Making the past with でした: “おいしいでした” is wrong; say おいしかったです.
- Using the regular pattern for いい: say よくないです, not “いくないです”.
- Putting な between an い-adjective and a noun: 大きいかばん, not “大きいなかばん”.
- Mixing up 大きい/小さい (size) and 高い/安い (price).
How to practise
- Describe five things in your room with an い-adjective + noun.
- Describe your hometown in the present, then your last trip in the past.
- Practise the four forms of いい until they come automatically.
- Do the worksheet: kanji writing, matching and the “make it negative/past” exercise.

Frequently asked questions
Can I say おいしいでした?
No. い-adjectives carry their own past tense: おいしかったです. です after an い-adjective only makes it polite — it never changes the tense.
What is the difference between 〜くないです and 〜くありません?
They mean the same. 〜くないです is very common in speech; 〜くありません sounds a little more formal and is often used in writing or careful speech.
Can I use 古い for people?
No — 古い is for things. To say someone is older or elderly, use other words such as 年上 (older than me) or お年より (elderly person), which you will meet later.
How do I say “very” or “not very”?
Use とても before an adjective for “very”: とても高いです. For “not very”, use あまり with the negative: あまり高くないです (it isn’t very expensive).
