New: practical guides to visas, work and everyday life in Japan

N4 Grammar Lesson 3

Experiences: 〜たことがあります, 〜たり〜たり and 〜てみます

Talk about what you have and haven’t done with 〜たことがあります, give examples of activities with 〜たり〜たりします, say you will try something with 〜てみます and list examples casually with 〜とか — plus the kanji 旅, 写, 真, 映 and 画.

In this lesson you will

  • Talk about experiences with 〜たことがあります and answer job-interview small talk
  • Say you have never done something with 一度いちども〜たことがありません
  • Give examples of activities with 〜たり〜たりします
  • Say you will try something with 〜てみます and 〜てみたいです
  • List examples casually with 〜とか
  • Read and write 旅, 写, 真, 映 and 画

In a job interview, small talk often starts with experiences: 日本に来る前に、外国に住すんだことがありますか — “Have you lived abroad before coming to Japan?”. Coworkers will ask whether you have tried natto or been to an onsen. This lesson gives you three patterns built on the た-form and the て-form.

Have you ever …?: 〜たことがあります

The た-form + ことがあります means “I have (at some time) done …”: 富士ふじ山に登のぼったことがあります — “I have climbed Mount Fuji.” Ask with 〜たことがありますか and answer はい、あります or いいえ、ありません. It is about experience in your life, not about something you did this morning — for that, use 〜ました.

QuestionYesNo
すしを食べたことがありますかはい、ありますいいえ、ありません
温泉おんせんに行ったことがありますかはい、一回いっかいありますいいえ、まだありません

For “never”, use 一度いちども + negative: 一度いちども飛行機ひこうきに乗のったことがありません — “I have never been on a plane.” まだ (not yet) suggests you would like to: まだ温泉おんせんに行ったことがありません.

〜たことがあります is about life experience, so it sounds strange with a specific recent time: きのう、すしを食べたことがあります ✗. Say きのう、すしを食べました.

Doing things like …: 〜たり〜たりします

To give examples of activities without listing everything, add り to the た-form of each verb and end with します: 休みの日は、映画を見たり、料理りょうりをしたりします — “On my days off I do things like watching films and cooking.” The tense goes on the final します: 〜たり〜たりしました (past).

The last 〜たり needs する too — dropping it is a common mistake.

Trying something: 〜てみます

The て-form + みます means “try doing (to see what it is like)”: なっとうを食べてみます — “I’ll try eating natto.” 〜てみたいです is “I’d like to try”: 着物きものを着きてみたいです. 〜てみてください invites someone to try: このおかし、食べてみてください.

Here みます is written in hiragana. It comes from 見ます, but as a helper verb it is not written with the kanji.

Casual examples: 〜とか

In conversation, 〜とか lists a few examples: 休みの日は、映画とか買い物ものとかに行きます. It is casual — in writing or with your manager, 〜や〜など is safer.

Interview small talk

An original example from a job interview:

面接官めんせつかん:日本に来る前に、日本語を勉強べんきょうしたことがありますか。
アニタ:はい、あります。ネパールの学校で一年勉強べんきょうしました。
面接官めんせつかん:日本で旅行したことがありますか。
アニタ:はい、京都きょうとに行ったことがあります。写真をとったり、おてらを見たりしました。
面接官めんせつかん:温泉おんせんは?
アニタ:まだ行ったことがありません。でも、行ってみたいです。

Interviewer: Have you studied Japanese before coming to Japan? Anita: Yes, I have. I studied for one year at a school in Nepal. Interviewer: Have you travelled in Japan? Anita: Yes, I have been to Kyoto. I took photos, looked at temples and so on. Interviewer: And an onsen? Anita: I haven’t been yet. But I’d like to try.

New kanji: 旅, 写, 真, 映, 画

旅 (たび) — a journey: 旅行 (りょこう) is a trip. 写 and 真 make 写真 (しゃしん, photo); 真ん中 (まんなか) is the middle. 映 and 画 make 映画 (えいが, film). Readings, stroke counts and example words are in the Kanji section below.

Common mistakes

  • Using 〜たことがあります for something you did yesterday: きのう映画を見たことがあります ✗ → きのう映画を見ました ✓.
  • Dictionary form instead of the た-form: 食べることがあります means “I sometimes eat (it)”, not “I have eaten it”. For experience, say 食べたことがあります.
  • Dropping the final します: 映画を見たり、料理りょうりをしたり。 ✗ → …料理りょうりをしたりします ✓.
  • Writing the helper verb in kanji: 〜て見ます → 〜てみます.

How to practise

  • Write three things you have done in Japan and one you have never done, with 一度いちども.
  • Describe your days off with 〜たり〜たりします.
  • List three Japanese foods or places you want to try: 〜てみたいです.
  • Write 旅, 写, 真, 映 and 画 on the worksheet and do the fill-in exercise.

    やすみのひは、えいがをみたり、りょうりをしたりします。

In Kyoto I took photos, looked at temples and so on.

Verb (て-form)+みます

try doing …

Try something to see what it is like. 〜てみたいです = I’d like to try; 〜てみてください = please try. The helper みます is written in hiragana.

Examples

  1. なっとうを食べてみます。

    なっとうをたべてみます。

    Nattō o tabete mimasu.

    I’ll try eating natto.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use 〜たことがあります for things I did today?

No. It is about experience in your life, so it does not go with a specific recent time like きのう or けさ. For one event, say 食べました.

What is the difference between 〜たことがあります and 〜ることがあります?

With the た-form it means “I have done it (at least once)”. With the dictionary form, 〜ることがあります means “I sometimes do it”: ときどき日曜日にはたらくことがあります.

Is 〜たり〜たり only for two verbs?

No. You can give one, two or three examples: 映画を見たりします (I do things like watching films). Always end with する in the right tense.

What should I say in an interview if I have no experience?

Be honest and show that you are ready to learn: まだけいけんはありません。でも、やってみたいです — “I don’t have experience yet, but I’d like to try.”
