In this lesson you will
- Say something becomes … with い-adjective 〜くなる and な-adjective / noun 〜になる
- Say you make something … with 〜くする and 〜にする
- Say you can now do something with 〜ようになりました
- Say you no longer do something with 〜なくなりました
- Talk about a habit you try to keep with 〜ようにしています
- Read and write 赤, 青, 黒 and 色
Your first months in Japan are full of change: the weather gets colder, the leaves turn red, you start to read station names and you get used to new food. This lesson teaches the patterns for change — things that become different, things you make different and abilities or habits that slowly change — together with the colour kanji.
Becoming: 〜くなる and 〜になる
With an い-adjective, drop い and add くなる: 寒い → 寒くなる (to get cold). With a な-adjective or a noun, add になる: 元気 → 元気になる (to get well), 十一月 → 十一月になる. いい is irregular: よくなる.
| Type | Word | Becomes … |
|---|---|---|
| い-adjective | 寒い (cold) | 寒くなります |
| い-adjective | 赤い (red) | 赤くなります |
| い-adjective | いい (good) | よくなります |
| な-adjective | 上手 (good at) | 上手になります |
| な-adjective | 元気 (well) | 元気になります |
| Noun | 医者 (doctor) | 医者になります |
The past tense shows a change that has happened: 日本語が上手になりましたね — “Your Japanese has got good!” — a compliment you will hear often. A polite answer is いえいえ、まだまだです.
Making: 〜くする and 〜にする
With する instead of なる, someone makes the change: 音を小さくしてください — “Please turn the sound down.” 部屋をきれいにします — “I’ll clean the room.” なる says what happens; する says what a person does.
- エアコンの温度を高くしてもいいですか — May I turn the air conditioner temperature up?
- 帰る前に、机の上をきれいにしてください — Please tidy your desk before you go home.
Now I can: 〜ようになる
Dictionary form + ようになる describes a gradual change in what you can do or usually do. It is very often used with the potential form (lesson 7): 駅の名前が読めるようになりました — “I can read the station names now.” 毎朝ニュースを見るようになりました — “I’ve started watching the news every morning.”
For “no longer”, take the ない-form, drop い and add くなる: 国の友だちとあまり話さなくなりました — “I don’t talk to my friends back home much any more.” 寒くなって、自転車に乗らなくなりました — “It got cold, and I stopped riding my bike.”
Trying to: 〜ようにする
Dictionary form or ない-form + ようにしています describes a habit you try to keep: 早番の前の日は、十時にねるようにしています — “The day before an early shift I try to go to bed at ten.” 甘いものを食べないようにしています — “I try not to eat sweet things.” At work you will hear 〜ようにしてください as a polite instruction: 遅れないようにしてください — “Please make sure you are not late.”
Colours: 赤, 青, 黒 and 色
赤い (あかい) red, 青い (あおい) blue, 黒い (くろい) black and 白い (white, N5) are い-adjectives. Without い they are nouns: 赤, 青, 黒, 白. 色 (いろ) is colour: 何色が好きですか — “What colour do you like?” Other colours: 黄色い (yellow), 緑 (green), 茶色 (brown).
A green traffic light is called 青信号 — “blue light”. In older Japanese 青 covered both blue and green, and some words keep that use: 青りんご is a green apple.
Autumn leaves
In much of Japan, November is the season of autumn leaves (もみじ or 紅葉). You can describe it with this lesson’s grammar: 十一月になって、山の木が赤くなりました — “It’s November, and the trees on the mountains have turned red.”
My first year in Japan
An original example — a worker writes about the changes in their first year:
日本に来た時、日本語があまり話せませんでした。駅の名前も読めませんでした。今は、仕事の話が分かるようになりました。漢字も少し読めるようになりました。夜勤の前は、よくねるようにしています。体も元気になりました。でも、国の料理はあまり食べなくなりました。
When I came to Japan, I couldn’t speak much Japanese. I couldn’t read the station names either. Now I can understand what people say at work. I can read a few kanji, too. Before a night shift I make sure to sleep well, and I’ve become healthier. But I don’t eat food from home much any more.
New kanji: 赤, 青, 黒, 色
赤 — red: 赤い, 赤ちゃん (あかちゃん, baby). 青 — blue: 青い, 青信号. 黒 — black: 黒い, 白黒 (しろくろ, black and white). 色 — colour: 何色 (なにいろ, what colour). Readings, stroke counts and example words are in the Kanji section below.
Common mistakes
- Keeping い before なる: 寒いになります ✗ → 寒くなります ✓.
- く with a な-adjective: 元気くなります ✗ → 元気になります ✓.
- いいくなる ✗ → よくなる ✓.
- Dropping よう: 読めるになりました ✗ → 読めるようになりました ✓.
- Mixing up ようになる (a change that happened) and ようにする (an effort you make): 早くねるようにしています = “I try to go to bed early.”
How to practise
- Write three things you can do now that you couldn’t do when you came to Japan, with 〜ようになりました.
- Write two habits you try to keep, with 〜ようにしています.
- Name the colours of five things around you with 赤, 青, 黒 and 白.

Frequently asked questions
Why is a green traffic light called 青?
In older Japanese the word 青 covered both blue and green, and some words still use it that way: あおしんごう (green light) and あおりんご (green apple). Today みどり is the usual word for green.
What is the difference between 〜ようになる and 〜ようにする?
〜ようになる describes a change that happened: 読めるようになりました (I can read now). 〜ようにする describes an effort you make: はやくねるようにしています (I try to go to bed early).
How do I answer when someone says 日本語が上手になりましたね?
A modest answer is natural: いえいえ、まだまだです (no, I still have a long way to go), or ありがとうございます。もっとがんばります.
How do I say I stopped doing something?
For a change that just happened, use the ない-form + くなりました: 話さなくなりました. If you decided to stop, say 〜のをやめました, for example たばこをすうのをやめました.
