New: practical guides to visas, work and everyday life in Japan

N4 Grammar Lesson 7

What you can do: the potential form

Say what you can and can’t do with the potential form — 話せる, 食べられる, 来られる and できる — and with ことができます, tell 見える from 見られる, and describe your skills in a job interview — plus the kanji 英, 漢, 習, 勉 and 強.

In this lesson you will

  • Make the potential form of every verb group
  • Say what you can and can’t do: 日本語が話せます, 漢字はまだ書けません
  • Use dictionary form + ことができます and noun + ができます
  • Tell 見える / 聞こえる from 見られる / 聞ける
  • Recognise ら-less forms such as 見れる and 来れる
  • Read and write 英, 漢, 習, 勉 and 強

In a job interview, on a 履歴書りれきしょ (résumé) and in everyday life you need to say what you can do and what you can’t do yet. Japanese has a verb form for this: the potential form. At N5 you said できます with nouns (テニスができます). Now every verb gets its own “can” form.

Making the potential form

Group 1 (u-verbs): change the last u-sound to the e-sound and add る: 話す → 話せる. Group 2 (ru-verbs): change る to られる: 食べる → 食べられる. Irregular: する → できる, 来る (くる) → 来られる (こられる).

GroupDictionary formPotentialPolite
1話す話せる話せます
1書く書ける書けます
1飲む飲める飲めます
1買う買える買えます
1泳およぐ泳およげる泳およげます
2食べる食べられる食べられます
2起きる起きられる起きられます
irregularするできるできます
irregular来る (くる)来られる (こられる)来られます

Every potential form is itself a group-2 verb, so it has all the usual forms: 話せない (can’t speak), 話せた (could speak), 話せなかった (couldn’t speak), 話せます / 話せません.

Saying what you can and can’t do

The thing you can do usually takes が: 日本語が話せます — “I can speak Japanese.” You will also hear を, especially in longer sentences, but が is the safe choice. In negative sentences は is common because it contrasts: ひらがなは読めますが、漢字はまだ読めません — “I can read hiragana, but I can’t read kanji yet.”

  • 一人で電車に乗のれます — I can take the train by myself.
  • 朝五時に起きられますか — Can you get up at five in the morning?
  • 土曜日も来られます — I can come on Saturdays too.
  • きのうはあまりねられませんでした — I couldn’t sleep much last night.

ことができます

Dictionary form + ことができます means the same as the potential form. It is a little more formal and is common in rules, notices and writing: 寮りょうの台所だいどころは夜十時まで使つかうことができます — “The dormitory kitchen can be used until 10 p.m.” After a noun, just use ができます: 車の運転うんてんができます (I can drive), 日本語ができます.

Can see, can hear: 見える and 聞こえる

見える and 聞こえる mean that something comes into your eyes or ears by itself: 窓まどから山が見えます — “You can see the mountains from the window.” すみません、ちょっと聞こえません — “Sorry, I can’t hear you.” The potential forms 見られる and 聞ける mean that you are able to see or hear something because you have the chance: スマホで国のテレビが見られます — “I can watch TV from home on my phone.”

ら-less forms: 見れる, 食べれる, 来れる

In casual speech many people drop the ら of group-2 and 来る potentials: 見れる, 食べれる, 来れる. You will hear these every day, so learn to recognise them. In writing, in tests and in a job interview, use the full forms 見られる, 食べられる, 来られる.

Skills on a résumé

A Japanese résumé (履歴書りれきしょ) has a section for licences and qualifications (免許めんきょ・資格しかく). In an interview you will be asked about your skills. Useful sentences:

  • 日本語能力のうりょく試験しけんのN5に合格ごうかくしました — I passed JLPT N5.
  • 英語と日本語が話せます — I can speak English and Japanese.
  • パソコンでエクセルが使つかえます — I can use Excel on a computer.
  • フォークリフトの運転うんてんができます — I can drive a forklift.
  • 漢字はまだ少すこししか読めません — I can only read a few kanji yet.

Be honest about your level. Japanese interviewers usually value “I can’t yet, but I’m studying” (まだできませんが、今勉強べんきょうしています) more than a skill you can’t show on the first day.

A job interview

An original example — an interview for a job at a food factory:

面接官めんせつかん:日本語はどのぐらい話せますか。
リー:ふつうの会話はできます。でも、敬語けいごはまだむずかしいです。
面接官めんせつかん:漢字は読めますか。
リー:N5の漢字は読めます。今、N4の漢字を勉強しています。毎日三十分、練れん習しています。
面接官めんせつかん:夜勤きんもできますか。
リー:はい、できます。土曜日も来られます。

Interviewer: How well can you speak Japanese? Li: I can manage everyday conversation, but polite language (keigo) is still difficult for me. Interviewer: Can you read kanji? Li: I can read the N5 kanji. Now I’m studying the N4 kanji — I practise for thirty minutes every day. Interviewer: Can you work night shifts too? Li: Yes, I can. I can come on Saturdays too.

New kanji: 英, 漢, 習, 勉, 強

英 is in 英語 (えいご, English). 漢 is in 漢字 (かんじ). 習 is 習う (ならう, to learn from someone, to take lessons) and is in 練れん習 (れんしゅう, practice). 勉 and 強 make 勉強 (べんきょう, study); on its own 強い (つよい) means strong.

Common mistakes

  • Making group-1 verbs like group 2: 話せられる ✗, 書かれる ✗ (that is a different form) → 話せる, 書ける ✓.
  • する → すられる ✗ → できる ✓.
  • を with 見える: 山を見えます ✗ → 山が見えます ✓.
  • The ます-form before ことができます: 話しますことができます ✗ → 話すことができます ✓.
  • Using 来れる or 見れる in an interview: they are casual. Say 来られる, 見られる.

How to practise

  • Write five things you can do and three things you can’t do yet, with the potential form.
  • Prepare your answers to 日本語はどのぐらい話せますか and 何ができますか for an interview.
  • Write 英, 漢, 習, 勉 and 強 on the worksheet and do the potential-form exercise.

Frequently asked questions

Is 見れる wrong?

It is very common in casual speech, and you will hear it every day. But it is not accepted in tests, formal writing or a job interview — there, use 見られる, 食べられる and 来られる.

Should I use が or を with the potential form?

が is the standard choice: 日本語が話せます. を is also heard, especially in long sentences, but if you are not sure, use が.

What is the difference between 話せます and 話すことができます?

They mean the same. ことができます is a little more formal and is common in rules and notices; the potential form is more common in conversation.

How should I describe my Japanese in an interview?

Be honest and concrete: say what you can do (ひらがなとカタカナは読めます, ふつうの会話はできます), what you can’t do yet, and what you are studying now. If you passed a JLPT level, say which one.
