N5 Vocabulary Lesson 22

Shopping conversation

Everything you need at the shop counter: understand いらっしゃいませ, ask for things with 〜をください and 〜はありますか, ask いくらですか, talk about sizes and colours, pay with カードでいいですか, ask for a receipt — with two full model dialogues.

In this lesson you will

  • Understand what shop staff say: いらっしゃいませ, ふくろはいりますか …
  • Ask for things with 〜をください and 〜はありますか
  • Ask the price with いくらですか and understand the answer
  • Ask for another size or colour: 大きいの, 白いの
  • Pay and ask for a receipt: カードでいいですか, レシートをください
  • Read and write 白 and 長

Shopping is often the first real conversation you have in Japan — at the convenience store on your first night, in a clothes shop, at the drugstore. The good news: shop conversations follow a fixed pattern, and staff use the same polite phrases every time. In this lesson you learn to understand them and to answer with a few short sentences. Two model dialogues at the end put everything together.

What shop staff say

Staff sayMeaningYou can answer
Welcome! (when you come in)nothing — a small nod is fine
Do you have a points card?
Do you need a bag?
Shall I heat it up?
おはしはいりますかDo you need chopsticks?
Thank you (as you leave)どうも or a small nod

Staff speak very politely (敬語けいご, honorific language). You don’t need to answer in the same style — polite です / ます Japanese is perfect. いいえ、だいじょうぶです (“No, I’m fine”) is the most useful polite “no”.

Since July 2020, shops in Japan charge for plastic bags. That is why staff ask ふくろはいりますか — many people bring their own bag (エコバッグ).

Asking for things: 〜をください

Point and say これをください — “I’ll take this, please.” With a number, put the number after the thing: これを二つください, コーヒーを一つください. For flat things like tickets use 〜枚 (lesson 15): 切手きってを三枚ください. In a restaurant or café 〜をおねがいします works the same way and sounds a little softer.

Do you have …?

Ask for something you can’t find with 〜はありますか: 電池でんちはありますか — “Do you have batteries?” Staff may answer はい、こちらです (“Yes, here they are”) and take you there, or すみません、今いまないです / 申もうし訳わけございません (“I’m sorry — we don’t have any now”). You will also hear ございます, the very polite form of あります.

How much is it?

Point and ask これはいくらですか or 全部ぜんぶでいくらですか (“How much is it altogether?”). Listen for the number and 円. At the register the total appears on a screen, so you can always check it there. A price tag may show two prices: 税込ぜいこみ (tax included) and 税抜ぜいぬき (before tax). The 税込ぜいこみ price is what you pay.

Sizes and colours

JapaneseReadingMeaning

To ask for a different size or colour, put の after the adjective — it means “one”: もうすこし大きいのはありますか (“Do you have a slightly bigger one?”), 白いのはありますか (“Do you have a white one?”). For another colour in general: ほかの色いろはありますか. If something is too big, say ちょっと大きいです — ちょっと (“a little”) is the polite way to say “too”.

Trying clothes on

In a clothes shop ask 試着しちゃくしてもいいですか — “May I try it on?” (〜てもいいですか is from lesson 18). The fitting room is the 試着室しちゃくしつ. Take your shoes off before you step in: there is usually a small step or mat at the entrance.

Paying:

Ask カードでいいですか — “Is a card OK?” The particle で shows the way you pay. You can also say 現金げんきんで (cash), 電子でんしマネーで (e-money / IC card) or QRコードで. (“How will you pay?”). Put your cash or card on the small tray (トレー) by the register instead of handing it over directly. Your change is おつり.

Receipts and bags

The register prints a レシート (receipt) automatically. If your company pays you back for something, ask for a 領収書りょうしゅうしょ — a formal receipt with the company name on it: 領収書りょうしゅうしょをおねがいします. Staff may then ask — give the company name. For a bag, say ふくろをおねがいします; for a small extra bag, 小さいふくろを一枚ください.

Model dialogue: buying a shirt

SpeakerJapaneseEnglish
Welcome.
Excuse me, do you have this shirt in white?
Yes, we do. What size?
Here you are.
May I try it on?
Of course. This way.
It’s a little small. Do you have an L?
Yes, here it is.
I’ll take this. How much is it?
That’s 3,980 yen.
Is a card OK?
Yes, that’s fine. … Here is your receipt. Thank you very much.

Model dialogue: at the convenience store

SpeakerJapaneseEnglish
Welcome.
Excuse me, do you have batteries?
Yes, over there.
Shall I heat up the lunch box?
Yes, please.
Do you need a bag?
No, I’m fine.
That’s 860 yen altogether.
Here’s 1,000 yen.
Here’s 140 yen change. Thank you very much.

Common mistakes

The thing comes first: これをください.
  • Putting the number before the thing: say コーヒーを二つください, not “二つのコーヒーをください”.
  • Answering いいえ alone. Add だいじょうぶです or けっこうです — it sounds much friendlier.

How to practise

  • At the convenience store, listen for ふくろはいりますか and あたためますか and answer in Japanese.
  • Read the two model dialogues aloud, once as the customer and once as the staff.
  • Make your own dialogue for something you need to buy this week.
  • Write 白 and 長 on the worksheet and complete the shop conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to answer when staff say

No. いらっしゃいませ is a greeting to everyone who comes in, and customers usually don’t answer. A small nod or a smile is enough.

Why do staff speak so differently from my textbook?

Shop staff use けいご, a very polite style: ございます instead of あります, おまちください instead of まってください. You only need to understand it. Answer in normal polite Japanese with です and ます.

Can I pay by card everywhere?

Not everywhere. Most chains and convenience stores take cards, IC cards and QR-code payments, but some small shops and restaurants are still cash only. Ask カードでいいですか before you order, and carry some cash.

What is the difference between レシート and りょうしゅうしょ?

A レシート is the normal printed receipt. A りょうしゅうしょ is a formal receipt, often with your company name, that companies ask for when they pay you back for something. Ask for it when you buy something for work.
