In this lesson you will
- Read the kanji for people: 人, 男, 女, 子, 友 and 名
- Read school, work and country words: 学校, 先生, 会社, 外国人
- Read and write the compass directions 東, 西, 南 and 北
- Find your way at a station: 東口, 北口, 駅前
- Read shop signs such as 本店 and 本日休み
- Read and write 山, 川, 外, 駅, 店 and 校
In Japan you read kanji long before you write them — on station signs, maps, shop fronts and forms. This lesson brings together the kanji for people and places: the ones you already know from earlier lessons, plus ten new ones that you will see every day outside the station. The Kanji section below lists all 29: the ones marked “Review” come from earlier lessons (the lesson number is in brackets), and the other ten are new.
People: 人, 男, 女, 子, 友 and 名
| Japanese | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 人 | ひと | person |
| 男の人 / 女の人 | おとこのひと / おんなのひと | man / woman |
| 男の子 / 女の子 | おとこのこ / おんなのこ | boy / girl |
| 子ども | こども | child |
| 友だち | ともだち | friend |
| 名前 | なまえ | name |
人 has three common readings. On its own it is ひと. After a country it is じん: 日本人 (にほんじん), 外国人 (がいこくじん, foreigner). When you count people it is にん: 三人 (さんにん) — but 一人 and 二人 are ひとり and ふたり.
School, work and countries
The new kanji 校 (school) almost always appears in compounds: 学校 (がっこう, school) and 高校 (こうこう, high school). With 学, 生 and 先 from lesson 6 you can read 学生 (student) and 先生 (teacher). From lesson 16 you know 会社 (company) and 国 (country). The new kanji 外 means “outside”: 外 (そと) on its own, and 外国 (がいこく, foreign country) in a compound.
Nature: 山 and 川
山 (やま, mountain) and 川 (かわ, river) are two of the oldest kanji — they still look like a mountain and running water. You will meet them in many place names and family names, for example 山田 (やまだ), 小川 (おがわ) and 富士山 (ふじさん, Mount Fuji). In a mountain name, 山 is usually read さん.
Where things are: 上, 下, 中, 外, 右, 左, 前, 後
Position words follow の and are used with あります / います (lessons 9 and 14): 店は駅の前にあります — “The shop is in front of the station.” 外 joins the group: 犬は外にいます — “The dog is outside.” Remember that 後 is うし + ろ for “behind” (後ろ) but ご in 午後 (p.m.).
Directions: 東, 西, 南, 北
| Kanji | Reading | Meaning | On a sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| 東 | ひがし | east | 東口 (ひがしぐち) east exit |
| 西 | にし | west | 西口 (にしぐち) west exit |
| 南 | みなみ | south | 南口 (みなみぐち) south exit |
| 北 | きた | north | 北口 (きたぐち) north exit |
Japanese lists the directions in the order 東西南北 (とうざいなんぼく) — east, west, south, north. In compounds the readings change: 東京 (Tokyo, “eastern capital”), 関西 (かんさい, the Kansai region), 東南アジア (とうなんアジア, Southeast Asia) and 東北 (とうほく, the Tōhoku region).
Reading station signs
Big stations have several exits, and the exit you choose decides which side of the station you come out on. Meeting a friend? Always say which exit: 駅の北口で会いましょう — “Let’s meet at the north exit of the station.”
| Sign | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 駅 | えき | station |
| 駅前 | えきまえ | in front of the station; the station area |
| 東口 / 西口 | ひがしぐち / にしぐち | east exit / west exit |
| 中央口 | ちゅうおうぐち | central exit |
| 改札 | かいさつ | ticket gates |
| 出口 / 入口 | でぐち / いりぐち | exit / entrance |
| 一番線 | いちばんせん | platform 1 |
口 means “mouth”, and in station names it means an opening or exit. After another word it changes to ぐち: 東口, 出口. You will learn 口 as a kanji in lesson 24.
Reading shop signs
The new kanji 店 means “shop”. On its own it is みせ; after another word it is usually てん.
| Sign | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 店 | みせ | shop |
| 本店 | ほんてん | main store; head office |
| 駅前店 | えきまえてん | station branch (of a chain) |
| 店員 | てんいん | shop assistant |
| 本日休み | ほんじつやすみ | closed today |
| 営業中 | えいぎょうちゅう | open (now) |
| 準備中 | じゅんびちゅう | not open yet; preparing |
本日 (ほんじつ) is a formal word for 今日 (today), common on signs and in announcements. 中 after a word means “in the middle of”: 営業中 = “in business”, so the shop is open.
Common mistakes
- Reading 外国人 as “がいこくひと”. After a country word 人 is じん: がいこくじん.
- Mixing up 東 and 車: both have a box with a line through it, but 東 ends in two slanting strokes, like legs, and 車 ends in a long horizontal line.
- Writing 入る (enter) for 人 (person): in 人 the left stroke is longer; in 入る the right one is.
- Reading 店 as みせ in 本店. In compounds it is てん: ほんてん.
How to practise
- At your station, find the exit signs and read them aloud: 東口, 西口 …
- Draw a simple map of your area with 東西南北 and write the shops and schools on it.
- Read the names of chain-store branches you pass: 〜駅前店, 〜本店.
- Write the ten new kanji on the worksheet, then do the sign and direction exercises.

Grammar
Place+の+東・西・南・北
east / west / south / north of a place
Directions work like the position words 前 and 後ろ: place + の + direction + に あります. 学校は駅の北にあります — “The school is north of the station.” In a short answer, 〜です is enough: 駅の北です.
Examples
学校は駅の北にあります。
がっこうはえきのきたにあります。
Gakkō wa eki no kita ni arimasu.
The school is north of the station.
川の南に山があります。
かわのみなみにやまがあります。
Kawa no minami ni yama ga arimasu.
There is a mountain south of the river.
ぎんこうは駅の西口の前です。
ぎんこうはえきのにしぐちのまえです。
Ginkō wa eki no nishi-guchi no mae desu.
The bank is in front of the west exit of the station.
人: ひと・じん・にん
three readings of 人
On its own 人 is ひと (あの人). After a country or area it is じん (日本人, 外国人). When you count people it is にん (三人, 何人) — except 一人 (ひとり) and 二人 (ふたり).
Examples
あの人は日本人ですか。
あのひとはにほんじんですか。
Ano hito wa Nihonjin desu ka.
Is that person Japanese?
店に外国人が三人います。
みせにがいこくじんがさんにんいます。
Mise ni gaikokujin ga sannin imasu.
There are three foreigners in the shop.
店: みせ・てん
shop on its own and in compounds
On its own 店 is みせ: この店. After another kanji it is usually てん: 本店 (ほんてん), 駅前店 (えきまえてん), 店員 (てんいん). The same pattern — kun’yomi alone, on’yomi in compounds — is true of many kanji: 山 / 富士山, 外 / 外国.
Examples
この店はやすいです。
このみせはやすいです。
Kono mise wa yasui desu.
This shop is cheap.
駅前店は十時からです。
えきまえてんはじゅうじからです。
Ekimae-ten wa jūji kara desu.
The station branch opens at ten.

Frequently asked questions
Why does 人 have so many readings?
Like most kanji, 人 has a native Japanese reading (ひと) and readings that came from Chinese (じん, にん). Use ひと on its own, じん after a country (にほんじん) and にん when you count people (さんにん). ひとり and ふたり are special.
Do I need to know the direction kanji at N5?
Yes. 東, 西, 南 and 北 are on most commonly accepted N5 kanji lists, and you need them every day: station exits, maps and addresses all use them.
Why is the “exit” kanji read ぐち in station names?
The kanji means くち (mouth). When it comes after another word, the first sound often becomes voiced: ひがし + くち = ひがしぐち. The same sound change happens in many compound words. You will learn this kanji in lesson 24.
Is 店 an N5 kanji?
It depends on the list: some commonly used N5 lists include 店, others put it at N4. It appears on every street, so we teach it here with 駅.
