N5 Kanji Lesson 20

Kanji review: numbers, days, dates and prices

Review the number and calendar kanji — 一 to 十, 百, 千, 万, 円, 日 月 火 水 木 金 土, 年, 時, 分, 半 and 何 — learn 週 and 曜, and practise reading calendars, dates, times and prices.

In this lesson you will

  • Read 一 to 十, 百, 千 and 万 in any price
  • Read dates, days of the week and times without romaji
  • Use the special readings: ついたち, はつか, さんびゃく, はっせん …
  • Use 先週, 今週, 来週 and 毎週 without a particle
  • Read and write 週 and 曜

Numbers and dates are the kanji you will read most often in Japan: prices on menus, dates on forms, train times and work schedules. This review lesson brings together the kanji from lessons 7 and 8, adds the last two calendar kanji — 週 (week) and 曜 (day of the week) — and gives you plenty of reading practice. Cover the readings in the tables and test yourself. The Kanji section below lists all 28 kanji of this review: the ones marked “Review” come from earlier lessons (the lesson number is in brackets), and 週 and 曜 are new.

Numbers: 一 to 万

KanjiReadingKanjiReading
一いち六ろく
二に七なな / しち
三さん八はち
四よん / し九きゅう / く
五ご十じゅう
百ひゃく (100)千せん (1,000)
万まん (10,000)円えん (yen)

Big numbers are counted in units of 万 (10,000), not in thousands: 30,000 is 三万さんまん and 150,000 is 十五万じゅうごまん. Say 百ひゃく and 千せん on their own for 100 and 1,000, but 一万いちまん — with いち — for 10,000.

Prices: the sound changes

Most prices are regular, but watch these hundreds and thousands:

PriceReadingPriceReading
三百円さんびゃくえん三千円さんぜんえん
六百円ろっぴゃくえん八千円はっせんえん
八百円はっぴゃくえん一万円いちまんえん
何百円なんびゃくえん何千円なんぜんえん

On price tags and receipts you will usually see Arabic numerals — ¥1,280 or 1,280円 (せんにひゃくはちじゅうえん). Kanji numbers appear in vertical writing, on some menus and signs, and in formal documents, so it pays to read both.

Days of the week: 〜曜日

Now you can learn 曜 as a kanji on its own. It has 18 strokes, so write it slowly. On calendars and forms, the days are often shortened to one kanji in brackets: (月), (火), (水), (木), (金), (土), (日). Ask with 何曜日なんようびですか.

Weeks: 週

JapaneseReadingMeaning
先週せんしゅうlast week
今週こんしゅうthis week
来週らいしゅうnext week
毎週まいしゅうevery week
週末まつしゅうまつweekend
一週間かんいっしゅうかん(for) one week

Like 明日あした and 毎日まいにち, the words 先週, 今週, 来週 and 毎週 take no に: 来週休みます. A day of the week does take に: 来週の金曜日きんようびに.

Reading a calendar

Here is part of a November work calendar. Read each date aloud, then check the reading.

DateReadingPlan
十一月一日(日)じゅういちがつ ついたち(にちようび)休み — day off
十一月四日(水)じゅういちがつ よっか(すいようび)会議かいぎ 十時半 (じゅうじはん) — meeting at 10:30
十一月八日(日)じゅういちがつ ようか(にちようび)日本語のテスト 九時 (くじ) — Japanese test at 9:00
十一月二十日(金)じゅういちがつ はつか(きんようび)きゅうりょう日び — payday
十一月二十四日(火)じゅういちがつ にじゅうよっか(かようび)びょういん 四時 (よじ) — hospital at 4:00

Remember the special date readings from lesson 8: the 1st to the 10th, the 14th, the 20th and the 24th. Also useful: 何日なんにち (what date; how many days), 何月なんがつ (what month) and 何年なんねん (what year; how many years).

Times: 時, 分 and 半

四時よじ, 七時しちじ and 九時くじ are the special hours; 一分いっぷん, 三分さんぷん, 六分ろっぷん and 十分じゅっぷん the special minutes. A shift 八時半から五時まで is read はちじはんからごじまで — from 8:30 to 5:00.

Common mistakes

  • Reading 三百 as “sanhyaku”. It is さんびゃく; 六百 is ろっぴゃく and 八百 is はっぴゃく.
  • Saying “いっせん” for 1,000. Say せん — but いちまん for 10,000.
  • Counting in thousands: 20,000 is 二万にまん, not “二十千”.
  • Confusing 今週 (this week) with 今日きょう (today) — both start with 今.
  • Forgetting that 十日 is とおか and 二十日 is はつか.

How to practise

  • Read every price you see aloud in Japanese for a week.
  • Write next week’s plans in a calendar, using (月) to (日).
  • Read the date on your phone aloud every morning, with the day of the week.
  • Write 週 and 曜 on the worksheet, then do the calendar and price exercises.

Grammar

Number+円: 百 and 千 sound changes

reading prices

百 becomes びゃく after 3 (さんびゃく) and ぴゃく after 6 and 8 (ろっぴゃく, はっぴゃく). 千 becomes ぜん after 3 (さんぜん) and はっせん after 8. 何 follows 3: なんびゃく, なんぜん.

Examples

  1. これは三百八十円です。

    これはさんびゃくはちじゅうえんです。

Kore wa sanbyaku hachijū en desu.

    This is 380 yen.

  2. ぜんぶで八千六百円です。

    ぜんぶではっせんろっぴゃくえんです。

Zenbu de hassen roppyaku en desu.

    That’s 8,600 yen altogether.

Niman gosen en no jitensha o kaimashita.

    I bought a 25,000-yen bicycle.

〜年〜月〜日(曜日)

reading a date with the day of the week

Big to small: year, month, date, then the day of the week as one kanji in brackets. Read the bracket as the full day: (水すい) → すいようび.

Examples

  1. 二〇二六年十一月四日(水)

    にせんにじゅうろくねんじゅういちがつよっか(すいようび)

    Nisen nijūroku-nen jūichi-gatsu yokka (suiyōbi)

    Wednesday, 4 November 2026

    しけんはしちがついつか(にちようび)です。

Shiken wa shichigatsu itsuka (nichiyōbi) desu.

The exam is on Sunday, 5 July.

先週・今週・来週・毎週 (no に)

week words that take no particle

Like 今日きょう and 明日あした, these relative time words are used without に. A day of the week does take に: 来週の金曜日きんようびに.

Examples

  1. 来週、国から母が来ます。

    らいしゅう、くにからははがきます。

Raishū, kuni kara haha ga kimasu.

My mother is coming from my country next week.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Japanese count in 万 instead of thousands?

Japanese groups big numbers by four digits, not three: 万 (10,000), then おく (100,000,000). So 50,000 yen is 五万円 and 1,500,000 yen is 百五十万円. When you read a long number, find the 万 first.

Are prices written in kanji in Japan?

Usually not: price tags, receipts and ticket machines use Arabic numerals such as 1,280円. Kanji numbers appear in vertical writing, on some menus and signs, and in formal documents. Reading both is useful.

Why are 曜 and 週 taught so late?

曜 has 18 strokes and 週 has 11, and both mostly appear in fixed words (〜曜日, 毎週, 来週). Earlier lessons let you read them inside those words; now you can write them yourself.

How do I read a date like 11/4 (水)?

Read it as 十一月四日(水): じゅういちがつよっか すいようび. Japanese dates are written month/day, not day/month, so 11/4 is the 4th of November.
