N5 Reading Lesson 24

Reading practice: short notices

Read the short Japanese texts you meet every day — signs, a shop notice, a train announcement, a workplace memo and a short email — find the key information fast, and check yourself with comprehension questions.

In this lesson you will

  • Recognise common sign words: 入口, 出口, 〜禁止きんし, 注意ちゅうい, 本日休み
  • Find the date, time and place in a shop notice
  • Understand the key parts of a train announcement
  • Read a workplace memo and a short email and know what to do
  • Use a simple strategy for reading any short notice
  • Read and write 口, 天, 雨 and 語

You don’t need to understand every word of a notice — you need to find the information that matters to you: when, where, what happens and what you must do. This lesson gives you five short texts written for TalkToJapan, in the style of the notices, announcements and messages you will see in Japan. Read each one, then answer the questions in the practice quiz below. Furigana show the words you have not learned as kanji yet.

Sign words you will see

SignReadingMeaning
入口いりぐちentrance
出口でぐちexit
非常ひじょう口ひじょうぐちemergency exit
禁煙きんえんきんえんno smoking
〜禁止きんし〜きんし… prohibited (駐車ちゅうしゃ禁止きんし = no parking)
注意ちゅういちゅういcaution
押おす / 引ひくおす / ひくpush / pull (on doors)
本日休みほんじつやすみclosed today
営業中えいぎょうちゅうえいぎょうちゅうopen

Reading 1: signs

Five signs you could see in one day. What does each one tell you?

  • A: 入口 ⇒ — on the side of a building
  • B: 禁煙きんえん — on a table in a restaurant
  • C: 駐車ちゅうしゃ禁止きんし — in front of a garage
  • D: 足元あしもと注意ちゅうい — at the edge of a step
  • E: 本日休み — on the door of a shop

A: the entrance is this way. B: no smoking here. C: no parking. D: watch your step (足元あしもと = “at your feet”). E: the shop is closed today.

Reading 2: a shop notice

【お知しらせ】
十一月二十日(金)は、店の中の工事こうじのため、休みます。
二十一日(土)は、午前十時から午後八時まで開あいています。
ご迷惑めいわくをおかけしますが、よろしくおねがいします。
店長てんちょう

Look for the date and the verb first: 二十日(金) + 休みます → closed on Friday the 20th. 〜のため gives the reason (building work, 工事こうじ). The last sentence is a set phrase: “We are sorry for the trouble.”

Reading 3: a train announcement

まもなく、二番線ばんせんに、南山行ゆきの電車がまいります。
危あぶないですから、黄色きいろい線せんの内側うちがわまで下さがってください。
今日は雨のため、電車が十分ぐらいおくれています。
ご迷惑めいわくをおかけして、申もうし訳わけございません。

Station announcements use fixed phrases: まもなく (shortly), 〜番線ばんせん (platform …), 〜行ゆき (bound for …) and まいります, the very polite form of 来ます. おくれています means “is running late”. The same text usually appears on the screen above the platform, so you can read it as well as hear it.

Reading 4: a workplace memo

みなさんへ
来週の月曜日(十一月三十日)は、工場こうじょうの点検てんけんがあります。
この日は、午前八時に会社の前に来てください。工場こうじょうには入らないでください。
午後は休みです。
分からないことは、田中たなかさんに聞いてください。

A memo tells you what to do. Look for 〜てください (do this) and 〜ないでください (don’t do this): come to the front of the company at 8 a.m. on Monday the 30th, don’t go into the factory (there is an inspection, 点検てんけん), and the afternoon is off.

Reading 5: a short email

件名けんめい:あしたのシフト
グエンさん
おつかれさまです。山川です。
あしたは雨ですから、外の仕事しごとは休みです。
午前九時に、会社の二階かいの会議室かいぎしつに来てください。日本語の研修けんしゅうがあります。
よろしくおねがいします。

A Japanese work email starts with the name of the person, then おつかれさまです and the writer’s name, then the message, and ends with よろしくおねがいします. 件名けんめい is the subject line. Here: no outside work tomorrow because of rain; Japanese training at 9 a.m. in the meeting room on the second floor.

How to read a notice quickly

  • Read the title or subject first: お知しらせ (notice), 件名けんめい (subject), 注意ちゅうい (caution).
  • Find the numbers: dates 月 日, days (月) to (日), times 時 分, 午前 / 午後.
  • Find the verbs at the end of each sentence: 休みます, 開あいています, 〜てください, 〜ないでください.
  • Look for reasons with 〜のため and 〜から.
  • Skip polite set phrases such as よろしくおねがいします — they don’t carry new information.

Weather words: 天気 and 雨

Two of this lesson’s kanji are about the weather, which often changes plans: 天気 (てんき, weather), 雨 (あめ, rain), 大雨 (おおあめ, heavy rain). On event notices you may see 雨天中止ちゅうし (うてんちゅうし) — “cancelled if it rains”. 語 means “language”: 日本語, 英えい語 (English), 中国語 (Chinese).

How to practise

  • Take photos of three notices near your home or workplace and find the date, time and verb in each.
  • Read the train information screen on the platform while you listen to the announcement.
  • Write a short email to a colleague in the same pattern as Reading 5.
  • Write 口, 天, 雨 and 語 on the worksheet and answer the reading questions.

Grammar

Noun+のため(に)

because of … (notices, announcements)

In written notices and announcements, 〜のため gives the reason: 雨のため (because of the rain), 工事こうじのため (because of building work). In conversation people usually say 〜から instead: 雨ですから. At N5 you only need to recognise 〜のため.

Examples

  1. 雨のため、電車がおくれています。

    あめのため、でんしゃがおくれています。

Ame no tame, densha ga okurete imasu.

The trains are delayed because of the rain.

  2. 工事こうじのため、本日休みます。

    こうじのため、ほんじつやすみます。

    Kōji no tame, honjitsu yasumimasu.

Closed today because of building work.

〜てください/〜ないでください

do … / don’t … (instructions)

Notices and memos tell you what to do with 〜てください and what not to do with 〜ないでください (lesson 23). Find these endings first — they are the instructions.

Examples

  1. 午前八時に来てください。

    ごぜんはちじにきてください。

    Gozen hachiji ni kite kudasai.

    Please come at 8 a.m.

  2. 工場こうじょうには入らないでください。

    こうじょうにははいらないでください。

    Kōjō ni wa hairanaide kudasai.

Please don’t go into the factory.

〜から〜まで

from … to … (times, dates)

Opening hours and schedules use から (from) and まで (until): 午前十時から午後八時まで. With dates: 二十日から二十四日まで.

Examples

  1. 店は午前十時から午後八時まで開あいています。

    みせはごぜんじゅうじからごごはちじまであいています。

Mise wa gozen jūji kara gogo hachiji made aite imasu.

The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  2. 休み時間は十二時から一時までです。

    やすみじかんはじゅうにじからいちじまでです。

Yasumi jikan wa jūniji kara ichiji made desu.

The break is from twelve to one.

Very polite forms: まいります・ございます

announcement and shop Japanese

Announcements use very polite verbs. You only need to understand them: まいります = 来ます (comes), ございます = あります (there is), 申もうし訳わけございません = すみません (we are sorry).

Examples

  1. まもなく、電車がまいります。

    まもなく、でんしゃがまいります。

    Mamonaku, densha ga mairimasu.

    A train will arrive shortly.

  2. ご迷惑めいわくをおかけして、申もうし訳わけございません。

    ごめいわくをおかけして、もうしわけございません。

Go-meiwaku o okake shite, mōshiwake gozaimasen.

    We apologise for the inconvenience.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to understand every word of a notice?

No. Look for the title, the numbers (dates and times) and the verb at the end of each sentence. That is usually enough to know what the notice wants you to do. Polite set phrases like よろしくおねがいします carry no new information.

Why do announcements sound so different from normal Japanese?

Stations and shops use very polite set phrases, such as まいります instead of きます and ございます instead of あります. They repeat the same phrases every day, so you will learn them quickly by listening.

Are these real notices?

No. All five texts were written for TalkToJapan in the style of real notices, announcements and messages, using the words and kanji of the N5 course. Real notices may use more kanji — use a translation app with the camera for the parts you can’t read yet.

What does 〜のため mean, and do I need to use it?

It means “because of” in written Japanese: 雨のため = because of the rain. You only need to recognise it at N5. In conversation, say 雨ですから instead.
