New: practical guides to visas, work and everyday life in Japan

N4 Grammar Lesson 25

Causative: 〜させる and 〜させてください

Make the causative form, say who makes or lets someone do something, ask for permission politely with 〜させてください and 〜させていただけませんか, recognise the causative-passive (〜させられる), talk about training and skills tests — and learn 研, 究, 試, 験 and 質.

In this lesson you will

  • Make the causative form of all three verb groups
  • Say that someone makes or lets someone do something
  • Ask permission politely with 〜させてください and 〜させていただけませんか
  • Recognise the causative-passive: 〜させられる (made to do)
  • Read 研修しゅう, 試験, 質問 and 研究

At work you often need to ask for permission: “please let me take the skills test”, “please let me go home early today”. Japanese does this with the causative form — the same form that means “make someone do” and “let someone do”. This lesson teaches the causative, the polite requests built on it, and the causative-passive (“I was made to …”), which you only need to recognise at N4.

Making the causative

Group 1: last u-sound → a-sound + せる: 行く → 行かせる, 待まつ → 待またせる, 言う → 言わせる. Group 2: る → させる: 食べる → 食べさせる. Irregular: する → させる, 来る → 来させる (こさせる). Causative verbs conjugate like group 2: させます, させて, させた.

GroupDictionary formCausativePlease let me …

1帰る帰らせる帰らせてください
1休む休ませる休ませてください
2受うける受うけさせる受うけさせてください
2考える考えさせる考えさせてください
irregularするさせるさせてください
irregular来る来させる (こさせる)—

Make or let: who does what

A は B に〜させる: A makes or lets B do something. 部長ぶちょうは社員に報告ほうこく書を書かせました — “The manager had the staff write a report.” 父は私に日本へ行かせてくれました — “My father let me go to Japan.” With verbs of moving (行く, 来る, 帰る) the person can also take を: 先生は学生を早く帰らせました. Whether it is “make” or “let” depends on the situation; with 〜てくれる / 〜てもらう it is almost always “let” (a favour).

Please let me: 〜させてください

Causative て-form + ください asks permission to do something yourself: すみません、きょうは早く帰らせてください — “Excuse me, please let me go home early today.” その仕事、私にやらせてください — “Please let me do that job.” 少し考えさせてください — “Please give me a little time to think.” For a superior or a customer, the softer form is 〜させていただけませんか: 来月の技能ぎのう試験を受うけさせていただけませんか — “Would you let me take next month’s skills test?” In announcements you will hear 〜させていただきます: 本日は休ませていただきます — “We are closed today.”

Asking your manager: an example

リー:課長かちょう、今ちょっとよろしいですか。
課長かちょう:はい、何ですか。
リー:来月、介護かいごの技能ぎのう試験があるんですが、受うけさせていただけませんか。試験の日は休ませていただきたいんです。
課長かちょう:いいですよ。がんばってください。シフトはだれかに代かわってもらいましょう。
リー:ありがとうございます。それから、試験の前に、研修けんしゅうで習ならったことについて、少し質しつ問させてください。

Lee: Section manager, do you have a moment? Manager: Yes, what is it? Lee: There’s a care skills test next month — would you let me take it? I’d like to take the day of the test off. Manager: That’s fine. Good luck. Let’s ask someone to swap shifts with you. Lee: Thank you. Also, before the test, please let me ask a few questions about what we learned in training.

For the Specified Skilled Worker (i) status, applicants usually need to pass a skills test for their field and a Japanese test (for example JLPT N4 or the Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese), with some exemptions. Read our Specified Skilled Worker visa guide for the current rules.

Made to do: 〜させられる (recognition)

Causative + passive gives 〜させられる: “to be made to do (against your will)”. 毎朝、安全あんぜんチェックを練れん習させられます — “We are made to practise the safety check every morning.” 子どものとき、野菜やさいを食べさせられました — “As a child, I was made to eat vegetables.” Group 1 verbs often use a short form: 待またせられる → 待またされる, 行かせられる → 行かされる (一時間も待またされました — “I was kept waiting a whole hour”). You need to recognise these forms in reading and listening; you don’t need to use them yet.

FormExampleMeaning
causative待またせるmake / let someone wait
passive待またれるbe waited for (rare)
causative-passive待またせられる / 待またされるbe made to wait
set phraseお待またせしましたsorry to have kept you waiting

New kanji: 研, 究, 試, 験, 質

研 and 究 make 研究 (けんきゅう, research); 研修しゅう (けんしゅう) is training at work. 試 and 験 make 試験 (しけん, exam); 試す (ためす) is to try something out, and 経けい験 (けいけん) is experience. 質 is quality or nature: 質問 (しつもん, question) — 問 is from lesson 19 — and 品質 (ひんしつ, quality), a word you will see in factories.

Common mistakes

  • 帰ってください when you mean “let me go home”: 帰らせてください ✓ (帰ってください tells the other person to go home).
  • Group 2 causatives like group 1: 食べらせる ✗ → 食べさせる ✓.
  • 言う → 言あせる ✗ → 言わせる ✓.
  • Using させる about a superior: 部長ぶちょうに待またせました sounds as if you made them wait on purpose — say お待またせしてすみません.
  • Trying to produce させられる in every sentence: at N4, recognising it is enough.

How to practise

  • Write three polite requests for your workplace with 〜させてください or 〜させていただけませんか.
  • Write two sentences about what your parents let you do or made you do as a child.
  • Write 研, 究, 試, 験 and 質 on the worksheet and do the exercises.

Frequently asked questions

Is the causative “make” or “let”?

Both. The situation decides. With てくれる or てもらう it is almost always let, a favour: 行かせてくれました (they let me go). Without it, it can be make: 書かせました (had them write it).

When do I say させてください and when させていただけませんか?

させてください is fine with coworkers and in most daily situations. With a manager, a teacher or a customer, especially for a bigger request, させていただけませんか is softer and more polite.

Do I need to use させられる?

At N4 you need to recognise it in reading and listening, for example またされました (I was kept waiting). You do not need to produce it yet; it comes up again at N3.

What tests do I need for the Specified Skilled Worker visa?

For Specified Skilled Worker (i), applicants usually need a skills test for their field and a Japanese test such as JLPT N4 or the Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese, with some exemptions. Our Specified Skilled Worker visa guide explains the current rules.
