In this lesson you will
- Recognise the special honorific verbs: いらっしゃる, おっしゃる, 召し上がる, ご覧になる, なさる, くださる
- Make honorific verbs with お + ます-stem + になる
- Ask customers politely with お / ご + ます-stem + ください
- Make very polite requests with 〜ていただけませんか and 〜てくださいませんか
- Read 担当者, 以上, 以下, 正しい and 〜代
In shops, hotels, hospitals and care homes you will hear a special kind of polite Japanese: 敬語. It has two halves. Honorific language (尊敬語, this lesson) raises the other person — a customer, a guest, your company’s client, your manager. Humble language (謙譲語, lesson 27) lowers yourself. At N4 the goal is to recognise these forms and to use the common set phrases correctly; nobody expects perfect keigo from a learner.
Special honorific verbs
| Normal verb | Honorific | Example |
|---|---|---|
| いる / 行く / 来る | いらっしゃる | 部長はいらっしゃいますか — Is the manager in? |
| 言う | おっしゃる | お名前は何とおっしゃいますか — What is your name? |
| 食べる / 飲む | 召し上がる | どうぞ召し上がってください — Please help yourself. |
| 見る | ご覧になる | こちらをご覧ください — Please look at this. |
| する | なさる | どうなさいますか — What would you like to do? |
| くれる | くださる | お客様がお土産をくださいました |
| 知っている | ご存じだ | この店をご存じですか — Do you know this shop? |
いらっしゃる, おっしゃる, なさる and くださる have a special ます-form: いらっしゃいます, おっしゃいます, なさいます, くださいます (not いらっしゃります). You already know two of them from greetings: いらっしゃいませ and 〜てください.
お + ます-stem + になる
For most other verbs, put お before the ます-stem and になる after it: 帰る → お帰りになる, 待つ → お待ちになる, 使う → お使いになる. 社長は三時にお帰りになります — “The president will return at three.” こちらのペンをお使いになりますか — “Would you like to use this pen?” Verbs with a special form (above) don’t use this pattern: お見になる ✗ → ご覧になる ✓.
Asking customers: お / ご〜ください
お + ます-stem + ください is a polite request you hear and use every day at work: 少々お待ちください — “Please wait a moment.” どうぞお入りください — “Please come in.” こちらにお名前をお書きください — “Please write your name here.” With する-verbs made of Chinese-origin words, use ご: ご注意ください — “Please be careful.” ご利用ください — “Please use (our service).” You have seen お使いください on the train notice in lesson 20.
Very polite requests
To ask a customer or a superior to do something for you, use 〜ていただけませんか or 〜てくださいませんか: もう少しゆっくり話していただけませんか — “Could you speak a little more slowly?” こちらで少々お待ちいただけますか — “Could you wait here a moment?” These are softer than 〜てください, which can sound like an instruction.
At the hotel front desk
An original example:
スタッフ:いらっしゃいませ。ご予約のお客様ですか。
お客:はい、山下です。
スタッフ:山下様ですね。少々お待ちください。…お待たせしました。こちらの紙にご住所とお電話番号をお書きください。
お客:はい。朝ご飯は何時からですか。
スタッフ:七時から九時半まで、一階のレストランで召し上がれます。何か分からないことがありましたら、いつでもおっしゃってください。
Staff: Welcome. Do you have a reservation? Guest: Yes, Yamashita. Staff: Ms Yamashita — please wait a moment. … Thank you for waiting. Please write your address and phone number on this form. Guest: Sure. What time is breakfast? Staff: From seven to half past nine, in the restaurant on the ground floor. If there is anything you don’t understand, please don’t hesitate to tell us.
Honorifics are never used about yourself or your own group: you don’t say 私はいらっしゃいます. Lesson 27 shows the humble forms you use for yourself, and how to talk about your own manager to people outside the company.
Useful words for work
| Word | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 担当者 | たんとうしゃ | the person in charge |
| お客様 | おきゃくさま | customer; guest (polite) |
| ご主人 | ごしゅじん | someone else’s husband; the owner (recognition) |
| 電話代 / 部屋代 | でんわだい / へやだい | phone bill / room charge |
| 以上 / 以下 | いじょう / いか | or more / or less; 以上です = that’s all |
| 正しい | ただしい | correct |
Careful with 以上 and 以下: they include the number. 十八歳以上 means 18 and over, 三人以下 means three or fewer. At the end of a report or a speech, 以上です means “that’s all”.
New kanji: 者, 主, 代, 以, 正
者 is a person (in compounds): 担当者, 医者 (いしゃ, doctor), 研究者 (けんきゅうしゃ). 主 is main or master: 主に (おもに, mainly), ご主人. 代 is a charge, a generation or “instead”: 電話代 (でんわだい), 時代 (じだい, era), 代わりに (かわりに, instead). 以 marks a limit: 以上, 以下, 以外 (いがい, except). 正 is correct: 正しい (ただしい) and 正月 (しょうがつ, New Year).
Common mistakes
- Honorifics about yourself: 私はあした会社にいらっしゃいます ✗ → 私はあした会社にまいります ✓ (humble, lesson 27).
- The ます-form of いらっしゃる: いらっしゃります ✗ → いらっしゃいます ✓.
- お + になる with a verb that has a special form: お見になりました ✗ → ご覧になりました ✓.
- Reading 以下 as “less than”: 三人以下 includes three.
- Too much keigo: one polite verb per sentence is often enough. お待ちください is right; お待ちになってくださいませ is too much for daily work.
How to practise
- Learn five set phrases by heart: 少々お待ちください, どうぞお入りください, こちらをご覧ください, どうぞ召し上がってください, 何とおっしゃいましたか.
- Listen for いらっしゃいませ, ご利用ください and ご注意ください in shops and stations.

Practice quiz
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to speak perfect keigo at N4?
No. At N4 you need to recognise the common honorific forms and use set phrases such as しょうしょうおまちください and どうぞおはいりください. Customers and coworkers appreciate polite effort; mistakes in keigo are normal for learners.
What is the difference between honorific and humble language?
Honorific language (this lesson) raises the other person and is used about what they do: いらっしゃいます. Humble language (lesson 27) lowers you and is used about what you do: まいります. Never use honorifics about yourself.
Is おまちください the same as まってください?
Both ask someone to wait. まってください is polite but can sound like an instruction. おまちください is what staff say to customers and is the safer choice at work.
Does 以下 include the number?
Yes. 以下 means or less and 以上 means or more, and both include the number: 三人以下 is three people or fewer. みまん means less than, not including the number.
