In this lesson you will
- Give a status update with 〜るところ / 〜ているところ / 〜たところ
- Say what should be true or should happen with 〜はずです and 〜はずがありません
- Use ます-stem + 始める / 終わる / 続ける / 出す
- Talk about other people’s wishes and feelings with 〜たがる and 〜がる
- Read common surnames and 歌, 音楽, 教える and 楽しい
At work people constantly ask “Where are you with that?” and “When will it arrive?”. Japanese has neat patterns for exactly these questions: ところ tells the stage of an action (about to start, in the middle, just finished) and はず tells what you expect. This is the last grammar lesson of N4, and it ends with something fun: the year-end party (忘年会), karaoke, and the kanji of the most common Japanese surnames.
The stage of an action: 〜ところ
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| dictionary form + ところです | about to … | 今から出るところです — I’m just about to leave. |
| 〜ているところです | in the middle of … | 今、資料を作っているところです — I’m making the materials right now. |
| 〜たところです | have just … | 今、終わったところです — I’ve just finished. |
ところ (literally “place”) here means a point in time. It is perfect for status updates to a manager: A: 報告書はどうですか B: 今、書いているところです。三時までに出します — “I’m writing it now. I’ll hand it in by three.” Compare 〜たところ with 〜たばかり: both mean “just did”, but ばかり can cover a longer time — 先月日本に来たばかりです — “I only came to Japan last month.” Recognise ばかり; use ところ for “a minute ago”.
Should: 〜はずです
Plain form + はずです says what you expect, based on facts you know: 部品は三時までに届くはずです — “The parts should arrive by three (the supplier confirmed).” 山田さんはもう帰ったはずです — “Yamada should have gone home already.” Nouns take の: あしたは休みのはずです; な-adjectives な: ひまなはずです. 〜はずがありません is strong: “there is no way that …”: あの真面目な田中さんが遅れるはずがありません — “There’s no way that serious Tanaka would be late.” Don’t use はず for your own plans — that is 〜つもり or 〜予定 (lesson 11).
Start, finish, continue: ます-stem + 始める / 終わる / 続ける / 出す
Join these verbs to the ます-stem of another verb: 読み始める (start reading), 食べ終わる (finish eating), 歩き続ける (keep walking), 泣き出す (suddenly start crying). 出す is sudden and often not planned: 急に雨がふり出しました — “It suddenly started to rain.” 先月から日本語の歌を習い始めました — “I started learning Japanese songs last month.” この本、もう読み終わりましたか — “Have you finished reading this book?”
Other people’s feelings: 〜がる and 〜たがる
In Japanese you can say 私は寒いです or 私は帰りたいです, but you can’t know someone else’s feelings directly. For other people, add がる to the adjective stem or to 〜た(い): 子どもが寒がっています — “The child is (showing that they are) cold.” 弟は日本に来たがっています — “My younger brother wants to come to Japan.” ほしい → ほしがる (N5 lesson 17): 妹が新しいスマホをほしがっています. Use がる with the ている form for what people show now. Never use it about your manager or a customer — 部長が帰りたがっています sounds rude; say 部長はお帰りになりたいようです or just ask.
Names on the shift board
Many common surnames use this lesson’s kanji 田 (rice field) and 野 (field). Learn to recognise them on shift boards, name tags and forms:
| Name | Reading |
|---|---|
| 田中 | たなか |
| 山田 | やまだ |
| 上田 | うえだ |
| 中野 | なかの |
| 小野 | おの |
| 田村 | たむら |
| 前田 | まえだ |
Notice that 田 is た at the start of a name but often だ after another kanji (山田, 前田) — a sound change you met in N5 with 北口 (きたぐち). Names can have unusual readings, so when you are not sure, ask politely: お名前は何と読みますか.
The year-end party
Many workplaces hold a 忘年会 (ぼうねんかい, “forget-the-year party”) in December — dinner, drinks and often karaoke. An original example in a group chat:
山田:みなさん、忘年会の店を予約したところです。十二月二十日、七時からです。
リー:ありがとうございます! 今、シフトを見ているところです。その日は休みのはずです。
田中:グエンさんも来たがっていましたよ。カラオケが好きだそうです。
グエン:はい! 先月から日本の歌を習い始めました。でも、人前で歌うのは、ちょっとはずかしいです。
山田:だいじょうぶ。みんなで歌いましょう。楽しみですね。
Yamada: Everyone, I’ve just booked the restaurant for the year-end party. 20 December, from seven. Lee: Thank you! I’m looking at the shift right now — I should be off that day. Tanaka: Nguyen wanted to come too. Apparently she likes karaoke. Nguyen: Yes! I started learning Japanese songs last month. But singing in front of people is a bit embarrassing. Yamada: Don’t worry, we’ll all sing together. Looking forward to it!
You don’t have to drink alcohol at a work party. お酒は飲めないので、お茶でお願いします — “I don’t drink, so tea, please” — is completely normal, and many izakaya have soft drinks and halal or vegetarian options if you ask in advance.
New kanji: 田, 野, 歌, 教, 音, 楽
田 is a rice field: 田んぼ (たんぼ), 田中. 野 is a field or wild: 野菜 (やさい, vegetables), 野球 (やきゅう, baseball), 中野. 歌 is a song: 歌 (うた), 歌う (うたう). 教 is to teach: 教える (おしえる), 教室 (きょうしつ, classroom) — no more furigana. 音 is a sound: 音 (おと), 発音 (はつおん, pronunciation). 楽 is music and enjoyment: 音楽 (おんがく), 楽しい (たのしい), 楽 (らく, easy; comfortable). With this lesson you have met all 141 new kanji of the N4 course.
Common mistakes
- Mixing the three ところ: 出るところ = about to leave; 出たところ = just left.
- はず for your own plan: あした行くはずです (about yourself) ✗ → あした行くつもりです / 行く予定です ✓.
- 〜たい about another person: 弟は日本に来たいです ✗ → 来たがっています ✓ (or 来たいと言っています).
- Using がる about a superior: it sounds rude — ask them, or use 〜ようです.
- Reading every 田 as た: 山田 is やまだ.
How to practise
- Answer “What are you doing now?” three times today with 〜ているところです.
- Write three things you expect this week with 〜はずです (a parcel, a payday, a holiday).
- Write 田, 野, 歌, 教, 音 and 楽 on the worksheet and do the exercises.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between たところ and たばかり?
Both mean just did. たところ is only a moment ago: 今、終わったところです. たばかり can be longer ago, and often means not long ago: 先月日本に来たばかりです (I only came to Japan last month).
Can I use はず about my own plans?
Not for your intentions: use つもり or よてい (lesson 11). はず is for what you expect from facts you know, such as a delivery or a timetable. It can be about you when it depends on facts: シフトでは、あしたは休みのはずです.
Why can’t I say 弟は来たいです?
In Japanese you can only state your own feelings and wishes directly. For other people, say what they show (来たがっています), what they say (来たいと言っています) or what it seems (来たいようです).
Do I have to drink at a year-end party?
No. It is normal to say おさけは飲めないので、お茶でおねがいします. Ask the organiser in advance about halal or vegetarian food; many restaurants can help if they know early.
