New: practical guides to visas, work and everyday life in Japan

N4 Grammar Lesson 18

Verb pairs and results: 〜てある, 〜ておく and 〜てしまう

Learn the common transitive and intransitive verb pairs (開ける / 開く, しめる / しまる), describe states with 〜ている and 〜てある, say what you do in advance with 〜ておく and what went wrong with 〜てしまう, and read the kanji 開, 室, 屋 and 紙.

In this lesson you will

  • Use the common verb pairs: 開ける / 開く, 閉しめる / 閉しまる, つける / つく, 消けす / 消きえる, 入れる / 入る
  • Describe a state with 〜が〜ています and 〜が〜てあります
  • Say what you do in advance with 〜ておきます
  • Say you finished something or something went wrong with 〜てしまいました
  • Read 開, 室, 屋 and 紙 in 会議ぎ室, 部へ屋 and 手紙

At the end of a shift there is always a list: turn off the lights, close the windows, lock the door, prepare the papers for tomorrow. To talk about these jobs you need verb pairs — “I open the door” and “the door opens” are different verbs in Japanese — and three て-form patterns that describe results. This lesson uses closing duties in an office and a shop as its examples.

Verb pairs: I open it, it opens

Many verbs come in pairs. The transitive verb (someone does it) takes を; the intransitive verb (it happens) takes が: 私はドアを開けます — “I open the door.” ドアが開きます — “The door opens.”

Someone does it (を)It happens (が)Meaning
開ける (あける)開く (あく)open
閉しめる閉しまるclose; shut
つけるつくturn on (lights, air conditioner)
消けす消きえるturn off; go out
入れる入るput in; go in
出す出るtake out; come out
止める止まるstop
落おとす落おちるdrop; fall
こわすこわれるbreak

A useful clue: many intransitive verbs end in 〜まる or 〜れる / 〜える, and many transitive ones in 〜める or 〜す. Learn them in pairs, not one by one.

A state: 〜が〜ています

Intransitive verb + ている describes the state after a change — what you see now: 窓まどが開いています — “The window is open.” 電気がついています — “The light is on.” 財布さいふが落おちています — “There’s a wallet lying on the ground.” It says nothing about who did it.

Done on purpose: 〜が〜てあります

Transitive verb + てある also describes a state, but it shows that someone did it on purpose, usually as a preparation: 窓まどが開けてあります — “The window has been opened (to air the room).” 会議ぎ室にいすが並ならべてあります — “Chairs have been set out in the meeting room.” 紙に名前が書いてあります — “A name is written on the paper.” Note the particle: with てある the thing usually takes が.

In advance: 〜ておきます

て-form + おく means doing something now so that it is ready later: あしたの会議かいぎの書類るいをコピーしておきます — “I’ll copy the papers for tomorrow’s meeting (in advance).” It also means leaving something as it is: 窓まどは開けておいてください — “Please leave the window open.” In casual speech 〜ておく becomes 〜とく: やっとくね — “I’ll get it done.”

All done, or oops: 〜てしまいました

て-form + しまう has two meanings. 1. Completely finished: レポートを全部ぜんぶ書いてしまいました — “I’ve finished writing the whole report.” 2. Something you regret or did not want: かぎをなくしてしまいました — “I’ve lost the key (oh no).” 電車の中にかさを忘わすれてしまいました — “I left my umbrella on the train.” Casual forms: 〜ちゃう / 〜じゃう — 忘わすれちゃった, 飲んじゃった. When you report a mistake to your manager, say it politely and early: すみません、コップをこわしてしまいました.

Closing the office: an example

An original example at the end of the day:

山下:リーさん、帰る前に、会議ぎ室の電気を消けしておいてください。
リー:はい。あ、窓まどが開いていますね。閉しめておきます。
山下:ありがとう。あしたの会議かいぎの書類るいは?
リー:もうコピーしてあります。会議ぎ室のつくえの上においてあります。
山下:いいですね。…あ、コピー用の紙を全部ぜんぶ使ってしまいました。
リー:だいじょうぶです。新しい紙をコピー機きに入れておきました。

Yamashita: Lee, before you go, please turn off the lights in the meeting room. Lee: Sure. Oh, the window is open — I’ll close it. Yamashita: Thanks. What about the papers for tomorrow’s meeting? Lee: They’ve already been copied. I’ve put them on the desk in the meeting room. Yamashita: Great. … Oh, I’ve used up all the copy paper. Lee: It’s fine. I put new paper in the copier.

New kanji: 開, 室, 屋, 紙

開 is open: 開ける (あける, to open something), 開く (あく, to open; also ひらく for meetings and books) and 開店 (かいてん, opening a shop). Compare it with 間 and 聞 — all three are drawn inside a two-door gate. 室 is a room: 会議ぎ室 (かいぎしつ), 休憩けい室 (きゅうけいしつ, break room). 屋 is a building or shop: 部へ屋 (へや, room), 本屋 (ほんや, bookshop), 屋上 (おくじょう, rooftop). 紙 is paper: 紙 (かみ) and 手紙 (てがみ) — a letter, not toilet paper!

Common mistakes

  • Mixing the pair: ドアを開きます ✗ → ドアを開けます ✓ / ドアが開きます ✓.
  • てある with an intransitive verb: 窓まどが開いてあります ✗ → 窓まどが開けてあります ✓ (or 開いています).
  • Forgetting the regret in 〜てしまいました: かぎをなくしました is just a fact; なくしてしまいました shows you are sorry.
  • 手紙 read as toilet paper: it means “letter”.
  • Not reporting a mistake: in Japanese workplaces, report it early — すみません、〜てしまいました.

How to practise

  • Look around your room and describe five things with 〜ています (電気がついています, 窓まどが閉しまっています).
  • Write your closing checklist for work or home with 〜ておきます.
  • Write 開, 室, 屋 and 紙 on the worksheet and do the fill-in exercises.

Frequently asked questions

How can I remember which verb in a pair takes を?

The verb for someone doing something takes を (ドアを開ける); the verb for something happening takes が (ドアが開く). Many が verbs end in 〜まる, 〜れる or 〜える, and many を verbs in 〜める or 〜す. Learn each pair together with a short sentence.

What is the difference between 開いています and 開けてあります?

Both mean the window is open. 開いています only describes what you see. 開けてあります says someone opened it on purpose, usually as a preparation, for example to air the room.

Is てしまう always negative?

No. It can simply mean completely finished: ぜんぶ書いてしまいました (I have finished writing it all). But it often shows regret: なくしてしまいました (I have lost it). The situation tells you which.

What does 〜ておいてください mean?

It asks someone to do something in advance, or to leave something as it is: 電気をつけておいてください can mean please turn the light on before I come, or please leave the light on. The situation tells you which.
