In this lesson you will
- Find the main point of a notice or newsletter
- Read the question first and look for the part of the text that answers it
- Recognise how answer choices say the same thing in other words
- Tell 問題 (question; problem) from 質問 (question you ask)
- Read 早, 広, 方, 問, 題 and 答 in everyday words
The N4 reading section has longer texts than N5: notices, emails, short essays and information pages, with questions written in Japanese. The best way to get faster is to practise a method. This lesson gives you three new texts written for TalkToJapan — a garbage-day notice from a (made-up) ward office, a company newsletter and a learner’s essay — and nine questions in the JLPT style. Try each text before you read the help below it.
Every kanji in the texts was taught in N5 or in N4 lessons 1–19. Words with other kanji have furigana. The ward and company are made up, but real notices look very similar.
How to read a longer text
- Read the questions first. Then you know what to look for: a day, a rule, a reason or an opinion.
- Find the main point. In a notice it is usually in the title or the first sentence: ごみを出す日が変わります.
- Watch the words that change direction: でも, しかし (but), また (also), それで (so). The writer’s real point often comes after でも.
- Look for the reason: 〜から, 〜ので, 〜ためです often answer a どうして question.
- Expect other words in the answers. The text says 残業をしないで; the answer choice may say 遅くまで仕事をしない. Match the meaning, not the words.
Reading 1: a ward office notice
燃えるごみ = burnable rubbish, 缶・びん = cans and bottles, 第二 = the second (Saturday of the month). The notice compares the new days with the current ones in brackets (今は〜). お問い合わせください = please enquire. Real garbage rules differ by city and ward — see our garbage and etiquette guide.
Reading 2: a company newsletter
【社内ニュース 十二月号】
来月から、毎週水曜日は「早く帰る日」になります。水曜日は残業をしないで、午後五時半までに帰りましょう。どうしても仕事が終わらない人は、前の日までに課長に話してください。
また、工場の休憩室が広くなりました。電子レンジも一台から三台に増えましたから、昼休みに長い時間並ばなくてもいいです。休憩室を使った後は、テーブルをふいておいてください。
Help: 早く帰る日 = a “go home early” day. どうしても〜ない = (if) you really can’t …. 課長 = section manager. The second part starts with また (also) and is about a different topic: the break room. ふいておいてください uses 〜ておく from lesson 18 — please wipe it (so it is clean for the next person).
Reading 3: a learner’s essay
Help: an essay often has a turning point. Here the first part is happy (the first snow), でも starts the difficult part (dark, cold mornings) and 今は gives the writer’s feeling now. 起きたら、〜ていました is the “discovery” たら of lesson 16, くらいし、寒いし the reasons with し of lesson 12, and ねるようにしました the habit pattern of lesson 8.
問題 or 質問?
Both can be “question” in English. 問題 (もんだい) is a question on a test or a problem to solve: この問題は難しいです, 問題ありません (no problem). 質問 (しつもん) is a question you ask a person: 質問してもいいですか. The answer to both is 答え (こたえ), and “to answer” is 答える: 質問に答えます. On the JLPT, the instructions say つぎの文を読んで、質問に答えてください — read the following text and answer the questions.
New kanji: 早, 広, 方, 問, 題, 答
早 is early: 早い (はやい), 早く (はやく), 早朝 (そうちょう, early morning). 速い (fast) is a different kanji with the same sound. 広 is wide: 広い (ひろい), 広場 (ひろば, square). 方 has two common readings: かた for a polite “person” and “way of doing” (あの方, 読み方) and ほう for direction and comparison (東の方, 〜のほうが is usually written in kana); in 夕方 it is がた. 問 is to ask (問題, お問い合わせ) and 題 is a topic or title (問題, 宿題 homework). 答 is 答え and 答える.
Common mistakes
- Choosing an answer because it repeats words from the text: check that the meaning matches.
- Mixing the new days and the current days in a notice: the brackets (今は〜) show the old rule.
- Missing また: in Reading 2 it starts a new topic.
- 問題 for asking a person: 問題してもいいですか ✗ → 質問してもいいですか ✓.
- Reading 夕方 as ゆうほう: it is ゆうがた.
How to practise
- Pick up a real notice from your building, ward office or workplace and find its main point, the days and the rules.
- Time yourself: read each text above and answer its questions in five minutes.
- Write 早, 広, 方, 問, 題 and 答 on the worksheet and answer the reading questions there.

Grammar
Main point first: お知らせ · title · first sentence
where to find what a notice is about
Notices put the topic in the title (【…】) and the first sentence. Details follow as a list, and the old rule is often in brackets: (今は〜).
Examples
ごみを出す日が変わります。
ごみをだすひがかわります。
Gomi o dasu hi ga kawarimasu.
The rubbish collection days are changing.
来月から、水曜日は早く帰る日になります。
らいげつから、すいようびははやくかえるひになります。
Raigetsu kara, suiyōbi wa hayaku kaeru hi ni narimasu.
From next month, Wednesday becomes a go-home-early day.
Signposts: でも · また · それで · 〜からです
but · also · so · it is because …
でも turns the text (the writer’s point often follows), また adds a new topic, それで gives a result, and 〜からです / 〜ためです at the end of a sentence give the reason.
Examples
でも、日本の冬は大変なこともあります。
でも、にほんのふゆはたいへんなこともあります。
Demo, Nihon no fuyu wa taihen na koto mo arimasu.
But Japanese winters can also be hard.
冬は空気がきれいで、山がよく見えるからです。
ふゆはくうきがきれいで、やまがよくみえるからです。
Fuyu wa kūki ga kirei de, yama ga yoku mieru kara desu.
It’s because the air is clear in winter and you can see the mountains well.

Frequently asked questions
How long are the reading texts in the real N4?
The N4 reading section has short texts (notices, emails, messages) and some longer ones, such as short essays and information pages. The exact format and number of questions are set by the test organisers and can change, so check the official JLPT website, jlpt.jp, before the test.
Should I read the questions or the text first?
For notices and information pages, read the questions first: then you know whether to look for a day, a rule or a reason. For essays, many learners read the text once quickly, then read the questions and go back to the right paragraph.
Why are the correct answers worded differently from the text?
Because the test checks that you understood the meaning, not that you can find the same words. The text says ざんぎょうをしないで (no overtime); the answer may say not working late. Match the meaning.
Are the garbage days in Reading 1 real?
No. The ward and the days are made up for practice. Real rules depend on your city or ward: check its garbage calendar and our garbage and etiquette guide.
