N4 Kanji Lesson 20

Review 11–19: kanji and grammar review

Review N4 lessons 11–19: compare たら, ば, と and なら and ている, てある, ておく and てしまう, sort all 48 kanji by meaning, tell look-alike kanji apart, and read a train notice, a recipe card and a typhoon notice. No new kanji.

In this lesson you will

  • Choose between たら, ば, と and なら
  • Choose between 〜ている, 〜てある, 〜ておく and 〜てしまう
  • Review all 48 kanji of N4 lessons 11–19, grouped by meaning
  • Tell look-alike kanji apart: 特 / 持, 開 / 間 / 聞, 牛 / 午, 体 / 休
  • Read a train notice, a recipe card and a typhoon notice

This lesson brings N4 lessons 11–19 together. There is no new grammar and no new kanji. You will compare the forms that are easy to mix up, sort the 48 kanji of those lessons by meaning, practise look-alike kanji and read three new texts written for TalkToJapan. The Kanji section lists all 48 kanji, each marked with the lesson that teaches it.

Every kanji in the texts was taught in N5 or in N4 lessons 1–19. Words with other kanji have furigana.

Which “if”? たら, ば, と, なら

FormUse it forExampleLesson
〜たらif / when; requests and plans after it駅に着いたら、電話してください16
〜てもeven if雨がふっても、行きます16
〜ばthe condition; advice; どうすれば早く行けば、すわれます17
〜とalways; machines; directions — no requests右に曲まがると、銀行があります17
〜ならadvice about what someone just said京都とに行くなら、朝早く出たほうがいいです17

Quick test: is the second part a request? Then use たら (or なら for advice), never と. Is it a machine or directions? Use と. Are you answering someone’s plan? Use なら.

Reading 1: a train notice

【お知しらせ】
特急「さくら」は、大雨のため、三十分ぐらい遅おくれています。急行と普通ふつう電車は、今、止まっています。
東京駅に着く時間が分かったら、またお知しらせします。急ぐ方は、地下鉄てつをお使いください。

Help: 大雨のため = because of heavy rain (〜のため, N5). 遅おくれています = is running late. 分かったら is the たら of lesson 16. 急ぐ方 = people in a hurry (方 = a polite “person”), and お使いください is a polite “please use” (lesson 26).

Reading 2: a recipe card

【かんたん! 牛肉の野菜やさいいため】
牛肉:二百グラム たまねぎ:一つ ピーマン:二つ しょうゆ:大さじ二
一、野菜やさいを切ります。
二、フライパンに油あぶらを入れて、肉をいためます。
三、肉の色が変かわったら、野菜やさいを入れます。
四、しょうゆを入れたら、でき上がり! ご飯といっしょにどうぞ。

Help: 大さじ = tablespoon. いためます = stir-fry. 肉の色が変かわったら = when the meat changes colour — たら for “once it has happened”. でき上がり = done, ready. For halal and vegetarian checks, see lesson 14 and our food shopping guide.

Reading 3: a typhoon notice

【台風について 社員のみなさんへ】
あしたの朝、台風がこの町の近くを通るでしょう。風が強くなりますから、外に出ないでください。
工場は、あしたの午前中は休みです。午後の仕事については、あしたの朝十時までに、メールでお知しらせします。
電車が止まったら、むりに来なくてもいいです。会社に電話してください。

Help: 通るでしょう = will probably pass (lesson 11). 午後の仕事については = about the afternoon’s work. 電車が止まったら、むりに来なくてもいいです combines たら (lesson 16) and 〜なくてもいいです (lesson 4): if the trains stop, you don’t have to force yourself to come.

Common mistakes

  • A request after と: 着くと、電話してください ✗ → 着いたら、電話してください ✓.
  • てある with an intransitive verb: 開いてあります ✗ → 開けてあります ✓.
  • Mixing 牛 and 午: 午肉 ✗ → 牛肉 ✓; 牛後 ✗ → 午後 ✓.
  • Reading 旅行 as りょいき or たびこう: it is りょこう.
  • Reading 〜なくてもいいです as “must not”: it means “you don’t have to”.

How to practise

  • Cover the Kanji section’s readings and read every example word aloud; mark the ones you missed.
  • Write four sentences about your week: one each with たら, ば, と and なら.
  • Do the worksheet: kanji review, matching, the typhoon notice and “choose the form”.

Frequently asked questions

Are there new kanji in this lesson?

No. It reviews the 48 kanji of N4 lessons 11 to 19. The Kanji section lists them grouped by meaning, and each one says which lesson teaches it.

I still mix up たら and と. Any tip?

Ask whether the second part is a request, invitation or wish. If it is, use たら. Use と only for things that always happen, such as machines, nature and directions.

How can I remember look-alike kanji?

Look at the part that is different and give it a meaning: 持 has the hand, so it is hold; 休 has a tree, so it is a person resting. Write each pair side by side on the worksheet and say the words aloud.

What should I do after this review?

Go back to the lessons in the What to review table for any part you found hard, then continue with lesson 21. The N4 mock test in lesson 30 covers all 29 lessons.
