New: practical guides to visas, work and everyday life in Japan

N4 Reading Lesson 10

Review 1–9: a first month at work

Review N4 lessons 1–9 with three new texts about a first month at work in Japan — a diary, a rules sheet and a clinic notice — and check every pattern and all 45 kanji from those lessons. No new kanji.

In this lesson you will

  • Read a diary that uses 〜てみました, 〜ようになりました, 〜なければなりません and と思います
  • Read a workplace rules sheet and say what you must, must not and don’t have to do
  • Read a clinic notice and find the opening hours and medicine times
  • Review all 45 kanji from N4 lessons 1–9
  • Find the lessons you should go back to

This lesson brings N4 lessons 1–9 together. There is no new grammar and no new kanji: three new texts written for TalkToJapan use only what you have learned, about one person’s first month at a factory in Japan. Read each text, try to answer the questions in your head, then do the practice quiz below. The Kanji section lists all 45 kanji from lessons 1–9, each marked with the lesson that teaches it.

Every kanji in the texts was taught in N5 or in N4 lessons 1–9. Words with other kanji have furigana.

Reading 1: a diary

Look for the patterns: 言えるようになりました (lessons 7–8: “I can say … now”), 行ってみました and 入ったことがありませんでした (lesson 3), あらわなければなりません (lesson 4), 〜と思います (lesson 2) and 見たり、歩いたり (lesson 3). The writer’s opinion of the rules changes in the middle: first “there are many rules”, then “because there are rules, I can work without worry”.

Reading 2: a rules sheet

【新しい社員のみなさんへ】
一、仕事が始まる十分前までに、着替きがえてください。
二、工場の中では、スマホを使つかってはいけません。
三、休むときは、仕事が始まる前に、電話でリーダーに連絡れんらくしなければなりません。
四、制服せいふくは毎日あらわなくてもいいです。週に二回かいあらってください。
五、昼休みは、食堂どうで食べても、外で食べてもかまいません。

Sort the rules: what you must do (〜てください, 〜なければなりません), what you must not do (〜てはいけません) and what is up to you (〜なくてもいいです, 〜てもかまいません). 十分前までに combines 前 and までに: “by ten minutes before”.

Reading 3: a clinic notice

【南医院からのお知しらせ】
受付うけつけ:午前九時〜十二時、午後三時〜六時
休み:日曜日、祝日しゅくじつ、木曜日の午後
はじめて来る人は、マイナンバーカードを持もってきてください。
ねつがある人は、医院に入る前に、電話してください。
薬くすりは、食後に飲むものと、食間に飲むものがあります。食間は、食事の二時間ぐらい後です。

A clinic notice gives times first, then rules for patients. 祝日しゅくじつ is a public holiday. Note the last line: 食間 means between meals — about two hours after eating — not during a meal (lesson 5).

Common mistakes

  • 〜なくてもいいです (don’t have to) read as “must not”: rule 4 says you don’t have to wash the uniform every day.
  • 〜てもかまいません read as a prohibition: it means “it’s fine to”.
  • までに read as “until”: 十分前までに is a deadline.
  • 食間 read as “during meals”: it means between meals.
  • Skipping the change of opinion in a text: words like でも often show the writer’s real point.

How to practise

  • Write your own diary of your first month in Japan (or of this month) in six sentences, using at least four patterns from the table.
  • Read the Kanji section and cover the readings: say each word aloud.
  • Do the worksheet: kanji review, matching, the diary questions and the “choose the form” exercise.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there no new kanji in this lesson?

Review lessons give you time to fix what you have learned. Lesson 10 has all 45 kanji from lessons 1–9 in its Kanji section, each marked with the lesson that teaches it, and new texts that use them.

What should I do if I got fewer than 7 questions right?

Look at the questions you missed and the “What to review” table in this lesson, go back to those lessons, and try the quiz again a few days later.

Is this lesson like the real JLPT reading section?

The texts are short and practical, and the questions ask for the main point and details, as the reading section does. The real test has its own format and timing; N4 lesson 30 is a longer practice test. It is not official JLPT material.

Do I need to remember every reading in the kanji list?

Start with the readings in the words you use: あさ, しごと, びょういん, かぞく. Other readings come with new words in later lessons.
